Topic: Orphanage (band)

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

  Orphanage
Orphanages often attempt to find homes for children in their care; this often means finding adoptive parents for the orphans.
The largest existing orphanage in the United States is the Bethesda Orphanage, founded in 1740 by George Whitefield.
Historically, certain birth parents were often pressured or forced to give up their children to orphanages: those born out of wedlock; those born into poor families; those born with disabilities, or whose parents have disabilities; and girls born into patriarchial societies.

Playing in the band was a year long commitment for the students; it began in May with practice sessions that prepared them for tour from June to September.

The Jenkins Orphanage band would also called itself, on a number of prominent occasions, "A Pickinnany Band." Whether Jenkins’ band was inspired by the tradition of regimental bands or by minstrel shows, their early repertoire was no doubt formed from both.
Although Jenkins continued to struggle to support the orphanage and the three to five hundred boys he frequently found himself in charge of, he continued to focus his fundraising efforts on the band.
Not to be left out of this musical revolution sweeping the nation, the Jenkins Orphanage Band, too, when it was appropriate, began to cultivate the practice of "ragging" or jazzing their performances of some tunes.

Orphanage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An orphanage (historically an orphan's asylum before the latter word took on its modern insane asylum connotation) is an institution dedicated to caring for orphans (children who have lost their parents) and abused, abandoned, and neglected children.
Largely seen as an inferior alternative to foster care and adoption, orphanages may be privately or publicly funded, and many are run by religious organizations.
Historically, certain birth parents were often pressured or forced to give up their children to orphanages: those of children born out of wedlock or into poor families; those with disabilities or of children born with disabilities; and those with girls born into patriarchial societies.

 About
The bands were playing the “sound” we now refer to as jazz on Charleston street corners and had already crossed the Atlantic to play in London and Paris several years before Louis Armstrong was even born -- in 1900.
It is well known that the Jenkins Orphanage Bands proved to be a catalyst in the development of the jazz tradition in the United States.
While the orphanage bands performed in Europe, on the east coast, and in Charleston, the oppressive nature of Jim Crow in South Carolina eventually drove many members of the band to other cities in the south, New York, and Europe.
