Orpheus Descending - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orpheus Descending is a play by Tennessee Williams.
The play is a retelling of the ancient Greek Orpheus legend in modern clothes and deals, in the most elemental fashion, with the power of passion, art, and imagination to redeem and revitalize life, giving it new meaning.
Val, representing Orpheus, represents the forces of energy and eros which, buried as they are in compromise and everyday mundanity, have the tragic power to create life anew.

According to the best-known tradition, Orpheus was the son of Oeagrus, king of Thrace, and the muse Calliope.
Orpheus learned music from Linus, or from Apollo, who was also his lover and who gave him his own lyre (made by Hermes out of a turtle shell) as a gift.
Orpheus went down to the lower world and by his music softened the heart of Hades and Persephone (the only person to ever do so), who agreed to allow Eurydice to return with him to earth.

"Orpheus Descending" is by and large a tragic fable, the account of the rejuvenating effect Val has on Lady, and how an abusive, intolerant world punishes them both.
An undercurrent of hysteria suffuses "Orpheus Descending," from the holy-roller ranting of the sheriff's wife, Vee Talbott (an excellent Janice Duclos), to the libido-driven entreaties of the neurotic rich girl, Carol Cutrere (the superb Kate Goehring).
"Orpheus Descending" is by no means an easy play; the role of Val, like many of Williams's fantastical hustlers and he-men, may be darn near impossible.

 Orpheus Descending Summary
Orpheus Descending, in fact, descends from Williams’s first produced full-length play, Battle of Angels, which opened to disastrous reviews in 1940.
Both Orpheus Descending and its antecedent concern the arrival of a virile stranger in the midst of a repressed Southern community.
While the psychosexual dynamic that fuels most of Williams’s work was present in the earlier play, a surfeit of incident coupled with an excess of religious and pagan imagery threatened to overwhelm it.

Orpheus Descending, a CurtainUp DC review
Based upon the Greek myth of Orpheus, Williams imbued the play with several layers of Christian symbolism along with the Greek influence, as well as incorporating aspects from his own youthful experiences growing up in the South.
Although many still feel the playwright tried to do too much, it is on a whole an interesting stark drama that is at times insightfully comic and continues to speak to the times that we live in.
Orpheus Descending is definitely a must see, especially if you are investing time in the other Tennessee Williams productions going on around town.

If there is a stage direction in director Kymm Zuckert's copy of Tennessee Williams's Orpheus Descending that says "to be acted lyrically," she would have done better by the Love Creek production if she had ignored it.
And in Orpheus Descending, the symbolism hangs thick, and the exposition is lengthy.
So when Val Xavier (Val short for Valentine) tells Lady Torrance about the bird that cannot land but must stay in the air flying until it dies, it would be more meaningful (and less heavy-handed) if Val were talking about it for reasons other than metaphor.

A startlingly brave and bizarre adaptation of one of Williams' most complicated plays, Peter Hall's Orpheus Descending would certainly merit the tag "original" if it were not rendered so exactly along the baroquely stylized lines laid out by Williams in the text of his play.

Like the play itself, Redgrave is occasionally a bit too histrionic for her own good, and by the end of Orpheus Descending, Williams has characteristically packed in so much physical and emotional trauma that the film threatens to buckle under the weight of its own malignancy.

I just heard a promo for a D.C. production of the play — on the commercial-free Christian radio station! I was shocked because this station bills itself as “family-friendly” and runs incessant, and to my mind, way off-the-mark promos that associate “safe” art with Christian living.
Williams wrestled with and rewrote the play for years, and it's now considered by most of his critics to be another of his many interesting failures.
I posted my question about the Tennessee Williams play on a local radio message board, because I know that the GM of the station that aired the PSA reads and posts to the same board.

The title invokes the Greek myth of Orpheus, who tried in vain to rescue his wife Eurydice from Hell.
In this play, Hell is a small Southern town full of hypocrisy and racism; Orpheus is a drifter in a snakeskin jacket; and Eurydice is Lady Torrance, a woman trapped in a loveless and violent marriage.
