Closely connected with religious life, Orpheus was an augur and seer; practiced magical arts, especially astrology; founded or rendered accessible many important cults, such as those of Apollo and the Thracian god Dionysus; instituted mystic rites both public and private; and prescribed initiatory and purificatory rituals.
Orpheus went down to the lower world and by his music softened the hearts of Hades and Persephone (the only person to ever do so), who agreed to allow Eurydice to return with him to earth.

Orpheus in the Underworld (in French: 'Orphée aux enfers') is an opéra bouffe (or opéra féerie in its revised version) in two acts by Jacques Offenbach.
Note: Orpheus in the Underworld exists in several forms: Offenbach originally wrote it in a two-act form, then expanded it to four acts with a great deal of filler material, ballets, and such like when it proved popular.
Eurydice, however, has discovered what she thinks is a plot by Orpheus to kill Aristaeus, but is in fact a conspiracy between him and Pluto to kill her, so Pluto may have her.

Then again, the story of Orpheus’s wife-retrieving trip through the underworld was turned on its ear in the Offenbach version, in which Orpheus conspires with Pluto to get rid of the spouse he dislikes, only venturing after her when Public Opinion (a one-woman chorus sung by Joyce Castle) warns him of a potential backlash.

This is one of those desperately fun-fun-fun productions, where the pace never slackens enough to let people wonder if they are having fun yet, and which is so hyperactive you start to wonder if they are hiding something.
Jamie Allen's Orpheus is a smooth-voiced Richard Clayderman crooner: it is great to see this talented singer getting a break, even if this is not exactly what he had in mind.
