Orpiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Orpiment is an orange to yellow mineral that is found worldwide, and occurs as a sublimation product in volcanic fumaroles, low temperature hydrothermal veins, hot springs and as a byproduct of the decay of another arsenic mineral, realgar.
Orpiment was ground, processed and used for centuries as a pigment in painting, being one of the few clear, bright yellow pigments available to artists up until the 19th century.
The use of orpiment as a pigment matter ended almost entirely with the advent of the cadmium yellows and the various dye-based colors of the 19th century.

Cannon (1975) describes minor orpiment as accompanying realgar at its major occurrences in Washington, including the well-known locality in Green River Gorge north of Franklin, King County; the Alverson mine, Skagit County; and the American Arsenic and Bonanza Queen mines, Snohomish County.
Minor orpiment is reported from Kern (associated with stibnite and realgar in the economic borax deposits), Lake, Siskiyou, Sonoma, and Trinity Counties, California.

Orpiment of this general character is not new to Nevada's Carlin Trend gold deposits, as spectacular orpiment specimens have come from Newmont Mining Corporation's Twin Creek mine and Placer Dome's Getchell mine, both of which are in Humboldt County.
Due to the location of the orpiment in relation to the actual mining activity within the pit, the physical configuration of the pit, the size of the mining equipment in use, and the lateness of recognizing the significance of the find, much of the specimen-quality crystalline orpiment was not recovered.
The orpiment that was salvaged is somewhat fragile; as a result, most of the higher quality specimens are thumbnail sized.

There was lithostratigraphic control of mineralization; carbonate-rich wallrocks reacted with the mineralizing fluids emanating from a buried magmatic body and migrating along Albanian transversal faults, rather than argillaceous lithotypes.
The sulfur involved in realgar and orpiment deposition may be of magmatic origin, and there was enrichment of heavier S during late hydrothermal processes.
