The rural district was abolished in 1934 and until 1965 Orpington formed part of the Orpington Urban District.
Orpington is known for the "Buff", "Black" and "Speckled" chickens bred locally by William Cook in the 1890s.
Orpington is also a major hub on the London Bus network and is served by routes to Sidcup, Chislehurst, Bromley, Lewisham, New Addington, Chelsfield, Green Street Green, Farnborough, Cudham, Downe, Knockholt, Halstead, and Biggin Hill.

This road was ‘not adopted’, according to a footnote on the nameplate, which meant that, like many others in Orpington Urban District, it was not surfaced and maintained by the council.

George William Hingston became Rector in 1876 and over the next few years many changes were to take place.
In the case of Farnborough, this Civil Parish became combined with other Civil Parishes to form Orpington Urban District Council, later to become part of the London Borough of Bromley.
