 Orpington
Orpington is primarily a 20th century town although it had a main line railway as early as 1868.
Nineteenth century development was limited mainly to the replacement of existing buildings especially in the High Street, although Orpington New Town between the Priory and St. Mary Cray was built as a small self contained suburb with its own pubs and shops.
In 1904 the station was rebuilt and enlarged, allowing the train service to be improved considerably.

The bunker at Orpington is located at the rear of the former engine shed on the eastern side of the station behind the bus station.
There was also a Regional Control, which, for the Southern Railway during WW2, was in purpose built tunnels behind Deepdene House near Dorking, Surrey The house itself, which had become the Deepdene Hotel, had been taken over by the Southern Railway as their Regional Headquarters remaining operational until the mid 1960's.
During WW2 the three divisions of the Southern Railway (later Southern Region) in the London area were provided with a protected 'bunker' from which desicions could be taken as to which trains have priority and how to allocate scarce resources etc.

 Growing up in Orpington
The Fire Station was opposite the shop and when there was a fire one of the men always nipped into the shop to warn Mrs Smith that the maroon was going to be fired so that she would not get too much of a shock.
When we passed the water pumps near the railway bridge they seemed enormous to me. They used to go up and down and the noise would frighten me but I was afraid of saying anything for fear of being called a baby.
The bank by the side of the railway used to be covered in them on late summer evenings and we could always find strawberries there as well.

 CHELSHAM GARAGE 1925 to 1990
Plans were well under way in the 1920's between Colonel Holman Fred Stephens and the Southern Railway to construct a light railway from Orpington to Sanderstead with stations at :-
There was no real competition locally from the railway in Chelsham itself, because the two nearest railway lines were down in the valley with a station at Upper Warlingham on the London to Oxted line, and another railway line which runs from London to Caterham with a station at Whyteleafe.
It was not until 1934 that the London Transport Route 453 buses began running from Warlingham to connect with the train services operated by the Southern Railway in the valley.

An overgrown bay on the down side of the station was the terminus for the Rother Valley Railway which opened in 1900 to Rolvenden (then named Tenterden).
The South Eastern Railway (SER) opened their line from Tunbridge Wells to Robertsbridge on September 1st 1851, with the line arriving at the cutely named Bopeep junction on the Brighton to Hastings line on January 1st 1852.
There are hopes that the southern link to Robertsbridge can be reinstated and a collection of railway coaches and equipment can be seen in the yard.
