Inainte de construirea barajului, care a ridicat cu 32 m nivelul lacului de acumulare, in acest sector, cu multe praguri, stinci emerse, valtori si repezisuri, navigatia se facea in conditii grele (trecerea defileului dura 120 ore) si era posibila numai pe timpul zilei.
Pina la construirea barajului, pe linga capitania portului Orsova functiona o echipa de pilotaj, singura autorizata sa conduca navigatia pe zonele periculoase ale Dunarii.
