It was built in the midst of the fortified Isengard plain at the southern limit of the Misty Mountains and near the source of the River Isen.
Orthanc was a fivehundred foot tall tower built from four pillars of fl rock by the Men of Gondor.
From Orthanc, Saruman controlled many destructive machines of war, but these were incapacitated by the Ents when they flooded the plain about the tower.
Orthanc was built during the end of Second Age by the men of Gondor out of a single piece of stone by an unknown process and then hardened.
The roads were paved with stone-flags dark and hard; and beside their borders instead of trees there marched long lines of pillars, some of marble, some of copper and of iron, joined by heavy chains.
During the Fourth Age Orthanc was searched by AragornKing Elessar, and he found there many heirlooms of Isildur, among them the original Elendilmir, the Star of Arnor, which proved that Saruman had found (and probably destroyed) Isildur's remains.
The Orthanc-stone was placed in the impregnable Tower of Orthanc in the stronghold of Isengard on the western edge of Gondor.
Saruman knew that there was a palantir in Orthanc, for he had studied the archives of Minas Tirith.
After Saruman's forces were defeated at the Battle of Helm's Deep and Isengard was destroyed by the Ents, Gandalf and King Theoden of Rohan came to Orthanc to parley with Saruman on March 5, 3019.
ORTHANC toured concerts in Bryansk, Ryasan', Karachev, in Zelenograd as well.
Occasionally, I met ORTHANC, or to be more precise, ORTHANC found me. I'm very glad to belong to ORTHANC from the very beginning of our band.
I guess ORTHANC doesn’t have much in common with the bands who represent this style - I mean BESTIAL WARLUST, DESTROYER 666, SADISTIK EXEKUTION, etc...
The mighty tower of unbreakable stone built by the Men of Gondor in the beginning of their realm, set in the Ring of Isengard at the southern feet of the Misty Mountains.
We can therefore fairly safely date the name 'Orthanc' as emerging in Rohan sometime after III 2759, the year Saruman took up residence there.
The name they chose for the whole complex of Isengard, where Orthanc stood, is recorded: Angrenost, 'the fortress of Angren'.
About T.A. 3000, Saruman used the palantir of Orthanc, and was trapped by Sauron, after which, though he thought himself to be free, he was controlled by the Dark Tower.
In the language of Orthanc help means ruin, and saving means slaying, that is plain.” Theoden in his turn affirms that “you are a liar, Saruman, and a corrupter of men's hearts.” And Gandalf adds: “Saruman, you missed your path in life.

If the Ents attack an army in Orthanc and the army is destroyed by the Ent attack Saruman is destroted along with it but if no Shadow army is present the Ents walking into Orthanc only forces Saruman to sit tight inside his tower.
I know he can be eliminated within a defeated army defending Orthanc, but the game rules also specify that the FP can win if he controls Orthanc or if Saruman is eliminated at the end of a turn.
It is possible for the FP to attack Orthanc and kill the army defending it (and Saruman along with it) and then lose Orthanc to a Shadow counter-attack later in the same turn.
When Pippin retreived the Palantir after Wormtongue threw it from Orthanc, it is described as having a glowing red center.
However, I seem to recall one of Denethor's guards commenting on the farsightedness of the Steward and mentioning the belief that Denethor from time to time grappled with the mind of Sauron and that *white* light would issue from the windows of his tower.
I tend to agree that the lure of the Orthanc stone probably derived from Sauron.
I find squeezing tall towers into square formats VERY hard to do, so I naturally ended up drawing a lot that will never be on the box.
The design of the tower is very different from the Tower of Orthanc in the film trilogy, which Alan Lee designed from top to bottom.
A bit of a digression here: Alan had done a wonderful illustration of the base of Saruman'stower for the Lord of the Rings, which Peter had always admired.
o it was that when summer waned, there came a night of moon, and Gwaihir the Windlord, swiftest of the Great Eagles, came unlooked-for to Orthanc; and he found me standing on the pinnacle.
ound and round the rock of Orthanc the Ents went striding and storming like a howling gale, breaking pillars, hurling avalanches of boulders down the shafts, tossing up huge slabs of stone into the air like leaves.
I saw iron posts and blocks of masonry go rocketing up hundreds of feet, and smash against the windows of Orthanc.

The Wait List for the Orthanc environment has reached its capacity and has been closed.
Once surrounded by parkland and trees, Saruman's Orcs made a wasteland of the tower's grounds to feed their master's foul, fume-belching, subterranean factories.
I started on a true minifig scale version of Orthanc but with a base almost two feet across and a projected height of over 10 feet, I suspended the project since when I remembered that it would take eight times as many Legos (which I did not have).
This Orthanc creation is the second best that I have seen so far.
I tried to make an Orthanctower but it didn't look as good as yours.
Home / From Hobbiton to Mordor / Gwaihir rescues Gandalf from Orthanc
The scene where Gwaihir resues Gandalf from the dizzy heights of Orthanc is one of my favorites (I'm talking about the scene, not my try at it.) It is eerie and poetic and deserves several paintings.
But, if Thorondor had a wingspan of 20 fathoms, which is 120 feet, then Gwaihir seems rather modest compared to his illustrious ancestor.

While you will be able to use it, you will probably find it much easier with a modern browser.
The Escape From Orthanc boxed set is perfect for recreating Gandalf's struggle with the corrupted Saruman and his subsequent flight from Orthanc on the back of the great eagle Gwaihir.
