Maison Sijilmassa Orthoceras & Ammonite Prehistoric Primer
Orthoceras and ammonites - the embedded animal forms seen throughout our unique fossil marble - are prehistoric marine life that existed in ancient seas between the Ordovician and Devonian periods, and the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
Orthoceras, meaning “straight horn”, refers to a particular fossil genus of European and North African nautiloid cephalopods that existed from the middle Ordovician Period to the Devonian Period, or between 470 to 360 million years ago.
As orthoceras and ammonites died, their shells accumulated in great numbers on the sea floor where they were aligned by currents, buried by sediments, and transformed over the ages into stone by various natural physical and chemical processes.
