A layman’s thoughts on the Orthodox Study Bible « into the light
The OSB is not meant as a replacement to the Liturgy, or the Lectionary, or the Fathers, or the Councils, or the Prayers, etc. (as some commentators seem to think it was intended).
It is the entire Orthodox Bible, including the OT which is either translated from the Septuagint or at least modified where the Septuagine calls for it (the Septuagint being the Bible of Christ and the early Church).
The Scofield study Bible was one of the first Bibles with notes and the interpretations went a long way to solidify dispensational theology in America as the prominent evangelical theology.

ORA ET LABORA: Orthodox Study Bible: My Turn, I
To attain these goals, specific attention was given to the biblical interpretation of the fathers of the ancient and undivided Church, and to the consensus of the Seven Ecumenical or Church-wide Councils of Christendom, held from the fourth to eighth centuries.
The prayer of the editors and contributors of The Orthodox Study Bible is that it presents an understandable Bible text and commentary to (1) English-speaking Orthodox Christians the world over and to (2) non-Orthodox readers interested in learning more about the faith of the historic Orthodox Church.
My feeling is that many Orthodox people simply don't want to have to think for themselves (that is, to explore the mind of the Church in humility and prayer, seeking answers to questions about which the Fathers said little), but rather prefer a sort of cut-and-paste mentality.

Another example of an undiscerning transmittal by the Editors of the Orthodox Study Bible of the theories of higher criticism is this statement in the introduction to the Gospel of Saint Mark: "The Gospel of Mark may be dated shortly before the fall of Jerusalem ad 70.
The Orthodox do not call them mystics, but the friends of God, the law-givers and theologians of the Church; for they have ascended the mountain and entered into the darkness of the knowledge of God; their utterances and teachings are given with authority.
The Orthodox Study Bible, as is obvious from the few representative examples, is not patristic either in conception or content, in formulation or expression, in its commentaries or addenda; indeed, it is often not only unpatristic and untraditional, but antraditional, but anti-patristic and anti-traditional.

Orthodox christians neglect at our peril the results of independent scholarly research into the origin, dates, and authorship of the books of the Bible, although we shall always want to test these results in the light of Holy Tradition.
When we enter an Orthodox Church decorated in the traditional way, and look up towards the sanctuary, we see there in the apse the figure of the Mother of God with her hands raised to the heaven--the ancient scriptural manner of praying that many still use today.

However, the more apoplectic comments about the concept of study bibles being not indigineously Orthodox, not liking the icons, not having a new NT translation, the flow of the translation, the cover, etc, are bordering on the ridiculous.
While a work such as the OSB is an effort of many individuals and is not a reflection of any one particular individual, your contribution could be the necessary element which lends credibility to the work which you seem to find so lacking.
This is the Orthodox Faith, not that presented in the notes of the OSB for the Geneology of St. Luke and no connection is made to explain this within the conext of the Fest of the Annunciation.

Review of the Orthodox Study Bible
Several translations of the psalms from the Orthodox Church's Septuagint version into English have appeared in the last 20 years, and it surely would have been possible for the publishers to have arranged to use one of these if they truly wanted to offer an Orthodox text of the Bible to their readers.

Maybe the church in its life has been two used to the idea and fact that the Bible is largely not in the hands of the laity, and that reflects much of the criticism leveled at the OSB.
