Orthogastropoda Ponder and Lindberg, 1996: All remaining non-patellogastropod groups (node 9) are here regarded as a clade.
In the Orthogastropoda, the left osphradium was retained (as in Neritopsina, Cocculina, Neomphalus, and Apogastropoda), and it was regained in paired condition in Vetigastropoda.
In Orthogastropoda, tooth number was reduced to a single pair in Caenogastropoda or increased to four to five pairs in rhipidoglossate taxa.

In their work, which has become a standard reference in the field, Ponder and Lindberg (1997) showed that the Orthogastropoda is one of two subclasses of the Gastropoda the class of molluscs, the other subclass being the Eogastropoda.
This subclass, which one could call the true snails, is defined most briefly as all those gastropods which are not members of Patellogastropoda, the true limpets, or its ancestors.

A gastropod whose shell is either absent or internal.
Orthogastropoda includes snails, which have external shells, and slugs, which do not.
The absence of a shell in Orthogastropoda has evolved independently multiple times, meaning that there is more than one scientific classification for animals commonly lumped together as slugs.

Although, these early terrestrial gastropods are not directly related to the modern pulmonate land snails.
The primitive archaeogastropods (now included in Subclasses Eogastropoda and Orthogastropoda) reproduced by external fertilisation: their eggs and sperm shed via the exhalent current into the sea for fertilisation.
Reproduction on land and in fast flowing rivers required the evolution of internal fertilisation.
