Several unusual features of temple architecture also appeared, such as the apparent lack of a proper floor surface, the narrow five step stairway leading up to the entrance, and an adjacent stone base with circular cutting for a perirhanterion base.
Masses of decayed mud brick, some preserving traces of red plaster, indicate the building material above the local limestone orthostates; the absence of superstructure suggests those elements were of wood.
Excavations around the roughly rectangular limestone blocks that formed the core of the altar (presumably they were covered with plaster originally to enhance their appearance) revealed surprisingly little of expected deposits of ash or burned animal bones.

The Early Minoan Period: The Tombs
In its initial use (dated to the final pre-palatial phase, MM IA), this tomb consisted of a complex of small rectangular chambers fronted on the east by a rectangular unit consisting of a long N-S corridor on the west and a series of "cult rooms" at the south and east.
The west side of the corridor features a set of {orthostate}s [cut blocks set in such a way that their greatest dimension is oriented vertically] alternating with niches.
The odd corridor featuring niches and orthostates, as well as a type of cup with a pointed base that has been found associated with this phase of the tomb complex, have been compared by Watrous with contemporary Egyptian forms; neither the architectural feature nor the vase shape has a convincing Minoan pedigree.
