Sir Francesco Paolo Tosti, Italian composer naturalised English, was born in Ortona a Mare (Chieti) on 9 April 1846 and died in Rome on 2 July 1916.
After the usual hard period of traineeship - during which he held a position as organist in the Ortona cathedral and also conducted three operas in the theatre of his native town - in 1870 he settled in Rome and first met Giovanni Sgambati.
When reflecting upon his artistic production and style, one immediately realises his great and deep love for Mediterranean melody, which follows the patter of the “chamber aria” which was generously resorted to by the great opera composers of the nineteenth century.

All I know is that the "e Mare" is absolutely what is written there.
Ortona is the name of the city, Ortona a Mare sometimes referred to because the lower part of the city is on the shores of the Adriatic Sea.
It used to have beautifull beaches, when I was small, my family and I spent many summers by the shore.

Wednesday September 29 means I am off to Ortona a Mare to visit my maternal grandfather’s relatives.
This town is a coastal town of about 20,000 and the site of a famous World War II Battle (Moro River) where Canadians fought and died and to this day come back for memorials.
Antepasta of shrimp, 1° piatto of gnocchini di frutti a mare, secondo of spigola (small sea bass) with olives and potatoes and coniglio (rabbit) with olives, grilled cold eggplant and zucchini, green salad, homemade wine, peaches and fruit.

In Abruzzo~ Pescara, Francavilla al Mare, Ortona, San Vito and Fossacesia, the beaches are very nice also and you will find an assortment of pebble and sand beaches.
The Maiella and the Gran Sasso mountains are breathtaking they can be seen from the towns but if you have a car it is worth exploring.
