The city of Osage City is considered governmentally independent and is excluded from the census figures for the townships.

Osage County is situated about midway across the State, north and south, and about fifty miles from its eastern boundary.
It is bounded on the north by Shawnee County, on the east by Douglas and Franklin, on the south by Coffey, and on the west by Lyon and Wabaunsee.
Coal underlies the greater part of the area of the county, but it is not found in large quantities, or mined to any great extent, excepting in a belt comprising about 25 per cent of the county's area.

The Pioneer settlers came westward as early as 1810, purchasing land in Franklin County, MO. By 1822, the land was part of Gasconade Co, MO. Osage County was formed in 1841.
In 1855, the bottom part of Osage County was given to form the top half of the new Maries County.
As of August 2002, Osage County's 1850 census and Gasconade Co MO 1830 and 1840 census records are on line.

In 1895 there were still 4,500 people of Scottish birth in Kansas, with about a fourth of them concentrated in the coal-mining counties of Osage (Barclay), Crawford, and Cherokee.
The town of Barclay, Kansas, was established in 1872 on land which had been an Indian Reservation--that of the Sac and Fox Nations.
As the Kansas land was offered for sale a wealthy Quaker from Pennsylvania, John Wetherall, purchased a large tract of land where Barclay is now located, and sent out the call to Quakers to create a settlement there.

David Crawford Thoroman The first of his name to come to Kansas, the late David Crawford Thoroman was for many years engaged in school teaching and farming in Coffey and Osage counties, and is still remembered by the older residents as a man of upright character, possessed of a high sense of justice.
Albert Morton Thoroman was born on a farm in Osage County, Kansas, July 9, 1873, a son of David Crawford and Rebecca (Murphy) Thoroman.
His early boyhood and youth were passed on farms in Osage and Coffey Counties, and he was given excellent educational advantages in the public schools of Kansas and in the State Normal School, from which he was graduated in 1899, in addition to which he received instruction from his father.
