Osan is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, approximately 35 km south of Seoul.
The city was the scene of brutal battles with communist forces during the Korean War in 1950 (see Battle of Osan), before being liberated by American forces soon afterwards.
The United States Air Force base named after the city, Osan AB, home of the 51 Fighter Wing) is not actually located within the Osan municipality, but is instead 8 km (5 mi) south, in the Songtan district of Pyeongtaek.

 Osan Air Base
Osan Air Base is located in a section of South Korea known as the western lowlands.
Osan, with its 37 dorms, is second only to Lackland AFB, Texas, in the number of single/unaccompanied living quarters, and three new dorms are under construction at the Korean base.
Osan's runway closed for repairs 03 May 2000 causing a diversion of most of the base's flight operations to nearby Suwon Air Base (a Republic of Korea air force installation) until the project was completed 31 May 2000.

Osan is on and near the site of two significant events which occurred early in the Korean War.
Topping a hill a few miles north of Osan on the road to Suwon stands a monument, constructed by Companies B and C of the 3rd Engineering Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, in honor of the men who gave their lives in the valley.
In addition, Osan Air Base is the only American base in Korea built completely "from scratch" since there had never been a Japanese, Korean or American air strip on the location.

OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — U.S. Air Force families living near Osan and Kunsan air bases got temporary new homes Wednesday as military officials moved them on base as a force protection measure arising from terrorist attacks in the States.
Families living in Air Force Village, a housing area about two miles from Osan Air Base, and other off-base private rentals, were ordered to move onto the base, said Capt. April Dillard, 51st Fighter Wing spokeswoman at Osan, 25 miles south of Seoul.
Both spokeswomen said personnel assigned to Osan and Kunsan are restricted to the bases.

The announcement opens the doors for 40 students to attend Osan American High School and another 35 who were waiting to attend the Camp Humphreys Elementary School, said officials of the Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Korea district in Seoul.

OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — As part of a seminar on South Korea’s security sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, a group of South Korean journalists and scholars got an up-close look at U.S. forces during base visits last week.
With LaPorte’s briefing covering the broader security picture, the trip to Osan was seen as a way to help participants “to round out their knowledge of the security situation in Korea,” Glassman said.
The group ended their Osan tour with a stop at the Osan Shopping Mall, which opened Saturday, becoming the largest AAFES exchange in South Korea.
