Kunsan Air Base, a base of the United States Air Force, is located on the western side of the South Korean peninsula bordered by the Yellow Sea.
The base was first used by the United States in 1945, and from then until 1950, the Army and later the Air Force intermittently operated from Kunsan.
The 354th Tactical Fighter Wing, flying the F-100 Super Sabre, arrived at Kunsan in July 1968, as part of the buildup of forces in Korea in the wake of the seizure of the USS Pueblo by the North Koreans.

Osan Air Base is located in a section of South Korea known as the western lowlands.
The ROK government allowed the USAF to purchase 1,250 acres in 1952 to expand the base and a fifth Korean village (unnamed) was relocated in 1953 to enlarge the compound area for the location of Headquarters, Fifth Air Force, which maintained an advanced headquarters until the arrival of the 314th Air Division in 1954.
Osan's runway closed for repairs 03 May 2000 causing a diversion of most of the base's flight operations to nearby Suwon Air Base (a Republic of Korea air force installation) until the project was completed 31 May 2000.

Topping a hill a few miles north of Osan on the road to Suwon a monument was constructed by Companies B and C of the 3rd Engineering Battalion, 24th Infantry Division, in honor of the men who gave their lives in the valley.

Prior to the invasion of the Republic of Korea by the North Korean communists in 1950, the area, now designated Osan Air Base, consisted of four villages near the hillsides and a large number of rice paddies where the runway now lies.
The first base commander named the base Osan, as it was the only village shown in this region on military maps and because it was easy to pronounce.

OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — South Korean police have accused three U.S. Army officers and a government contract civilian employee of illegally shooting 90 ducks and geese near the Osan Air Base runway.
The program, operated by the base safety office, is aimed at keeping the runway clear of birds since bird strikes during landing and take off can cause aircraft to crash.
The men had paperwork signed in January 2000 by the mayor’s office in Pyongtaek, the community in which the air base is located, authorizing them to shoot birds as part of the bird strike program.

Base officials still won’t name the pilot, who was treated for a minor back injury but released from Osan’s medical facility last week, they said.

OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea — With their necks craned toward the hot blue sky and the roar of jet engines in their ears, several thousand mostly South Korean spectators turned out Sunday for the 2005 annual air show, hosted by the U.S. Air Force at Osan Air Base.
There were autographs to be had from U.S. Air Force and South Korean air force members; live music from several bands; and concession stands selling bratwurst, hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecued chicken sandwiches, barbecued pork sandwiches, Korean foods and cold beverages.
The air show’s first day was Saturday, with the audience limited to members of the U.S. military community and its South Korean employees.

And the U.S. security personnel usually manning that gate, the ROKAF security police that stand alongside them, plus the KNP augmentees that always stand there in pairs were also totally ineffective at stopping a drunk ajoshi from looking for a hamburger in all the wrong places.
