Feature: The legacy of Oscar Deutsch's cinemas | Arts critics | Guardian Unlimited Arts
Deutsch's architects were clearly well versed in the latest developments in European architecture, as well as the art deco decor that went, ticket-in-hand, with the movie business in the United States.
Deutsch's life and his legendary business ran like one of those old, pre-talkie films where everyone, with boaters and canes, seems to be in a tearing hurry, even when strolling through a park.
Deutsch was born at Balsall Heath, Birmingham, in 1893, the son of a Jewish scrap merchant, Leopold Deutsch, a Hungarian by birth, and Leah Cohen, a Jewish emigrant from Poland.

 Bradford - Odeon Theatre History
Deutsch had observed that only a few hundred yards away was the beautiful domed Alhambra Theatre and, more importantly, next to it was the huge and sumptuous New Victoria Theatre/cinema, ballroom and restaurant complex with a cinema capacity of 3318 seats.
Oscar Deutsch had achieved his aim to make all his new Odeons immediately recognisable with similar design features and styles based on an idea used earlier by Woolworths with their uniform store fronts.
Oscar Deutsch's wife Lily also had an influence in the interior design of this and other Odeon cinemas; in fact, she was responsible for selection of colours and designs of the interior decorations, achieving an original scheme for each theatre with no two alike.

His early training was conducted by his uncle, David Deutsch of Myslowitz, to whom he owed his wide acquaintance with Hebrew literature.
This famous essay was succeeded some time afterward by an article in the "Quarterly Review" on "Islam," which was not so successful because not dealing with so novel a subject and because Deutsch was not a special student of Arabic.
During the sittings of the Ecumenical Council at the Vatican, 1869-70, Deutsch acted as special correspondent of the "Times," and wrote a number of incisive letters on its deliberations.

Oscar Deutsch became a leading cinema entrepreneur responsible in the late 1920's and 1930's for the iconic ODEON cinema chain, which revolutionised movie going in the UK.
The name ODEON was colloquially understood as 'Oscar Deutsch Entertains Our Nation.' He opened his first Odeons in Birmingham and the West Midlands before designing and building several hundred more all around the country, bringing modern design, a distinctive architectural look in an art deco style and, above all, comfort to the nation's cinema goers.
The extensive Odeon circuit was very much a Birmingham enterprise - invented in and pioneered from Birmingham by Oscar Deutsch, designed in a modern style by Birmingham architects, Harry Weedon, and branded with that swish geometrical lettering in red and gold spelling out ODEON devised for Deutsch by the Birmingham firm, Pearce Signs
