Oscar posited, in his book Der Anfangwar das Ende (in English, The Beginning Was The End) the idea that it was eating the brains of other hominids that allowed human beings to develop the thinking power we have now.
Still, it is interesting to consider Oscar's theory of cannibalistic hominids developing greater and greater intelligence (while also stunting the ESP that Oscar believes all other animals share) to more measured paleontological sources.

In 1973, Oscar Kiss Maerth wrote a book called The Beginning Was the End: Knowledge Can Be Eaten, which detailed his theory that human beings began their ascent to the top of the food chain as an aggressive, cannibalistic order of apes more than a million years ago.
According to Maerth, our ancestral apes ate the brains of other apes, which resulted in heightened libido and mental acumen due to the large amounts of protein in brains.
Maerth’s ideas meshed with their own perceptions of American society as a rigid, robotic herd of conformist creatures merely focused on the mundane efficiency of survival.

According to the self-appointed genius philosopher Oscar Kiss Maerth, a Catholic priest and evolutionary theorist, intelligence can be eaten.
In his seminal 1971 work The Beginning Was the End, Maerth outlines a theory of evolution by which apes increased their intelligence by eating the brains of other apes.
Unfortunately, the same brain-based diet also increased sex drive, aggression and even the size of the brain itself, until the hominid brain was too big for the cranium.

Mothersbaugh and Casale were still stirred by the National Guard's murder of four Vietnam War protesters on their college campus two years earlier, so the band developed Maerth's theory into a new-wave manifesto that indicted the human race for devolving into nothing more than quasi-organic cogs in an automated, industrial Earth-machine.
Because they were art-school tech-dorks, Devo had an aesthetic that was largely dependent on visual intrigue, and their early recordings failed to gain any national momentum.
