  ooBdoo
Osedax is a genus of deep-sea siboglinid polychaetes, commonly called zombie or bone-eating worms, first discovered in Monterey Bay, California, in February 2002.
The worms were found living in a decaying gray whale in the Monterey Canyon, at a depth of 2,800 m (9,100 feet) using the submarine ROV Tiburon.
Osedax is Latin for "bone-eating", alluding to how they bore into the bones of whale carcasses to reach the lipids that they feed on, which are contained within the bones.

osedax Indemnification An entity seeking to transfer risk (an individual, corporation, or association of any type) becomes the insured party once risk is assumed by an insurer, the insuring party, by means of a contract, defined as an osedax policy.
Float is the concept that as osedax premiums are collected up front, and claims paid over time (sometimes up to periods of 10 years or more), the osedax companies are able to collect investment income on the money they have reserved for claims that have not occurred yet, or have not yet been paid.

North Sea marine worm discovered - Natural History Museum
A new species of marine worm called Osedax mucofloris (which means bone-eating snot-flower) has been found surviving in one of the best-studied marine environments on the planet, the shallow water environment of the North Sea.
All of the Osedax species found so far appear to be closely related to the vestimentiferan tubeworms, which are known only from undersea volcanoes called hydrothermal vents.
One theory is that whale-falls may be used as a type of 'stepping-stone' for deep-sea creatures to disperse throughout the oceans.

Bone-eating marine worms may protect whales - life - 14 July 2006 - New Scientist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The marine worms, of the genus Osedax, meaning bone-eating, are an unusual type of polychaete with no other close relatives in that class.
There may be 40 Osedax species new to science living off the coast of California alone, says Craig Smith, a marine biologist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
Most animals that survive on whale-fall either eat the surrounding bacteria, or scavenge from the carcass itself like the lithodid crab (pictured above), which is picking at the mandible of a 60-tonne blue whale that has been lying on the floor of the Santa Cruz basin for more than 50 years.

The new worms were found living off the skeletal remains of a grey whale carcass on the sea floor, 2891 metres below the surface of Monterey Bay in California.
One species, Osedax rubiplumus, is topped with a feathery red structures called palps, which act as gills to extract oxygen from the seawater.
The researchers said the worms were most closely related to the worms that live in the extreme conditions on deep-sea hydrothermal vents called fl smokers.

Osedax frankpressi, one of two new species of deep-sea marine worm that is only found on whale carcasses.
The most visible features of Osedax rubiplumus and Osedax frankpressi were their reddish feathery plumes, which extended into the water and acted as gills.
One of the study’s most remarkable discoveries was that the symbiotic bacteria in the Osedax worm species directly broke down lipids (fats and oils) from the whale bones to provide food for the worms.

Osedax is unlike any other worm, lacking eyes, stomach or a mouth.
The worm species, osedax, lack eyes, a stomach or a mouth, and are only a “balloon-like egg sac branching into a green root system” according to Goffredi, who reports her research in the September issue of Environmental Microbiology.
The impact of the partnership between osedax and their bacteria is seen in the turnover of organic material in the bones.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | 'Zombie worms' found off Sweden
Such "zombie worms", as they are often called, are known from the deep waters of the Pacific but their presence in the North Sea is a major surprise.
In October 2003, Glover and Dahlgren sank the remains of a dead, stranded minke whale in 120m of water and monitored what happened to the carcass over a period of months using remotely operated vehicles.
Scientists have established that all of the Osedax species so far identified appear to be closely related to vestimentiferan tubeworms, which are found only at the volcanic cracks in the ocean floor called hydrothermal vents.

Mortality must be pretty high, the lucky ones that grow to maturity would in all probability grow on another part of the same whale fall, since the sea bed is mostly desert-like in its vastness and whale falls are relatively rare.

This is a compiled image of the whale on which Osedax was discovered in February 2002, taken by the ROV Tiburon at a depth of 2,891m.
Scientists are eager to study Osedax, but it is difficult to stumble across a whale carcass in the ocean, even when looking for one.
There is still much to be learned from Osedax and hopefully their discovery makes one thing very clear – we have not yet discovered all that the oceans have to offer.

The researchers named the worms, a new genus, Osedax, which is Latin for bone eating.
The new whalebone worms were divided into two species, and the researchers concluded that the most recent common ancestor lived roughly 42 million years ago, about the same time whales themselves first evolved.
The scientists named the two species of Osedax "rubiplumus" for their red feathery gills and "frankpressi" in honor of Frank Press, a former president of the National Academy of Sciences who recently retired from the board of the Research Institute.

Deep-sea researchers have discovered an oddball worm that uses a previously unknown type of symbiosis to feed on whale skeletons—even though the worms have no mouth or gut.
One of the new genus of deep-sea worms, Osedax, harbors symbiotic bacteria in the greenish, rootlike squiggles above its rounded white ovaries.
However, the symbionts in female Osedax target an unusual food source—lipids from whale bones that have fallen to the ocean floor—Vrijenhoek and his colleagues report in the July 30 Science.

 Geotimes — August 2004 — Whale bone-eating worms
In this week's Science, Greg Rouse, a marine biologist at the University of Adelaide in Australia, and others created a new genus, Osedax, which translates as "bone devouring," to classify the new organisms.
Many of the larger tubeworms have a single root to help anchor them to the seafloor, however, Osedax has roots "a lot like a tree," says Ken Halanych, a marine biologist at Auburn University, who is not associated with the research.
Bacteria in the roots of Osedax produce nutrients by processing the fats and lipids in the bones of whales.

Vrijenhoek named the new genus Osedax, meaning "bone devourer." They'd been feeding on the ribs of a 30-foot-long (nine-meter-long) gray whale that had sunk to the depths of the canyon (such a carcass is called a whale fall).
In some anglerfish species, on the other hand, the male is comically petite, attaching himself to the female and withering away, leaving only his testes.

Laboratory photo of one of the newly discovered bone-eating worms, Osedax frankpressi, which has been removed from a whale bone.
The worms have no eyes, legs, mouths, or stomachs, but they do have colorful feathery plumes and green "roots." They use the roots to infiltrate the bones of dead whales, digesting the fats and oils inside with the help of symbiotic bacteria.
While not as extraordinary as Osedax, these previously unknown animals underline the previously unimagined biodiversity and unique adaptations of organisms in the deep sea.

Scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California found the worms in January 2002 on the carcass of a gray whale that had fallen dead to the bottom of Monterey Bay, nearly two miles down.
The male Osedax, Rouse said, “look like the babies of the close relatives,” even still carrying around some of their egg yolk.
However the Osedax manage to survive solely on dead whales in the vast oceans, they appear to have been doing it for a long time.
