Founded by Elendil and his sons at the end of the Second Age, Osgiliath straddled the Great River Anduin at a point approximately half way between the cities of Minas Anor to the west and Minas Ithil to the east.
During the War of the Ring the men of Gondor were hard pressed to prevent the enemy from breaking through at Osgiliath and were eventually forced to abandon it, shortly before the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
The name "Osgiliath" is Sindarin for "Dome of Stars", referring to the city's most prominent building, a great dome which once housed the city's Palantír.

The Battle of Osgiliath is a fictional battle of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Fords across the river were located in Osgiliath (half of the city was located on each side of the river) that were the only path a large army could cross the Anduin for hundreds of miles up or downstream (from Cair Andros to Pelargir).
Thus the Battle of Osgiliath was the first battle of the war in a strict sense.

The inclusion of Osgiliath was a masterstroke by PJ.
Osgiliath is only pointless from the limited point of view of "it wasn't in the book." From the point of view of making good movies, AND from the point of view of successfully adapting Tolkien's themes and plot lines it was a brilliant, brilliant addition.
Osgiliath was where Isildur and Anarion had their thrones, it housed the master-palantir in the Citadel of the Stars and was effectively the capital of Gondor, as well as being strategically important I think the men of Gondor defend it out of pride.

This area, to the east of the walls of Osgiliath, is merely a torn mesh of ground and the occassional broken stones.
A ring of trees of vast size, very ancient and still towering high though their tops are gaunt and broken, as if tempest and lightning blast have swept across them but failed to kill them or shake their fathomless roots.

One almost gets the impression that at this time the entire city of Osgiliath must be contained on the bridge, but perhaps not.
There can be no doubt that Osgiliath experienced a period of growth at least in the early centuries of Gondor's existence, and the city even if confined to the Bridge originally must have flowed out onto both shores of Anduin.
The river was quite wide, perhaps a mile wide, at the city's location, and the Bridge would have contained many houses and towers.
