Oskar Schlemmer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oskar Schlemmer (September 4, 1888 - April 13, 1943) was a German sculptor associated with the Bauhaus school.
Schlemmer's private letters to, in particular, Otto Meyer and Willi Baumeister, and his personal diary have given valuable insight on what happened at the Bauhaus.
Especially, he talks of how the staff and students respond to the many changes to and developments at the school.

The studies from Schlemmer's class, far from being realistic representations, clearly show an idealized image of man. In retrospective, it would seem that most of the teachers were rather interested in explaining the mechanics of the body, than developing an image of man beyond anatomy, or familiarizing the students with philosophical questions.
In 1926/27, Oskar Schlemmer extended the life drawing classes to a course in general theory on the proportions of the human body, presenting a wide concept of man including formal, biological, as well as psychological and philosophical aspects.
The emphasis on conformity is a typical example of the attempt to scientifically rationalize tuition during the Meyer era.

This documentary film, made with the artistic advice of Oskar Schlemmer's widow, presents an historically faithful, precise reconstruction of some of his dances.
More than any other film, it gives a sense of what Bauhaus teaching was really like, and is truly important to an understanding of the origins of contemporary dance.
