Oslo occupies an arc of land at the northern end of the Oslofjord.
Oslo was destroyed by fire in 1624, and was rebuilt at a new site across the bay, near Akershus Fortress, by king Christian IV of Norway and given the name Christiania (later, 1878-1924, Kristiania).
Oslo's centrality in the political, cultural and economical life of Norway continues to be a source of considerable controversy and friction.

Orchestra - Facts, Information, and Encyclopedia Reference article
A full size orchestra may sometimes be called a "symphony orchestra" or "philharmonic orchestra"; these prefixes do not indicate any difference either to the instrumental content or role of the orchestra, but can be useful to distinguish different orchestras based in the same city (for instance, the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra).
The unusual aspect of the orchestra was that, believing that in the ideal Marxist state all men are equal, its members felt that there was no need to be led by the dictatorial baton of a conductor; instead they were led by a committee.
In ancient Greece the orchestra was the space between the auditorium and the proscenium (or stage), in which were stationed the chorus and the instrumentalists.

The Oslo Philharmonic was split between two different radio orchestras in 1928, and when it was reorganised in 1931 the NRK provided financial support.
A separate radio orchestra was established in Bergen, while in 1938 a radio ensemble was established in Stavanger that was subsequently to become the core of the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestras in Stavanger and Trondheim are interesting examples of how regional orchestras act as bearers of the nation’s musical heritage, while maintaining close dialogue with the age in which they live.

Ravel opens the introductory Promenade commandingly on the trumpets, then the theme is taken up by the rest of the brass and mellowed by the strings to reach its climax on the full orchestra.
Its sheer originality was little appreciated then, and Rimsky-Korsakov, a less great composer but a master of the orchestra, took it upon himself partially to rework Mussorgsky's material, adding a more cultured veneer to what Mussorgsky had left.
Following a recent concert in London, The Times described the orchestra as being 'tautly disciplined, tingling alert in ensemble'.

classical music - andante - oslo philharmonic combines the predictable and the brave - to make the magnificent
Their programme combined the predictable with the brave, the predictable coming with something from their Norwegian homeland.
Yan Pascal Tortelier's bright-eyed reading allowed each movement to flow into the next, pausing only after a splendid "Troyte." Woodwind pointing in "RPA" was delicate, and "Ysobel" brought a melting viola solo (enjoyed again in a charmingly halting "Dorabella").
The encores were well-chosen: Walton's "Touch her soft lips and part" (Henry V) for strings alone, before the full orchestra was restored for a rousing "Trepak" from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, extrovert tambourines multiplying like rabbits.
