Oslo class frigates are a Royal Norwegian Navy frigate design, based on the U.S. Navy Dealey class destroyer escorts.
The lead ship, Oslo, ran aground at Marsteinen on January 24, 1994, and on January 25 she was taken under tow.
All of the Oslo class frigates are due to be replaced with new Fridtjof Nansen class frigates starting in late 2005.

It was a coincidence that the so-called keel stretching of the frigate KNM Fridtjof Nansen took place on April 9th, the date marking the invasion of Norway by Germany in 1940.
The ceremony held Wednesday marked the completion of the first module of the first of the new frigates, a year after the project was undertaken.
Compared to the old Oslo class vessels, the Nansen class is 35 meters longer, nine meters taller and two meters deeper below water, five meters broader and has a water deplacement that is three times higher.

Of the latter class, the Gelibolu (ex-USS Reid [FFG-30]) was transferred on 1 January 1999, the Gökçeada (ex-USS Mahlon S. Tisdale, [FFG-27]) arrived in Turkey on 27 September, and the USS John A. Moore (FFG-19) is to be transferred this year to complete a sextet of the class in Turkish service.

The ship was due to be pulled into deeper water by three tugs on September 12 after pumping out oil reserves to make her lighter.

She and her sisterships Oslo (F300), Bergen (F301), Trondheim (F302) and Stavanger (F303) were all built in Norway during the mid 1960s and were partially funded by the United States.
