``In fact, the Osmanabad Municipal Council and a host of other gram panchayats have passed resolutions opposing any move to rename the district,'' the petitioners say.
AURANGABAD, Aug 12: The Aurangabad Bench of the Bombay High Court has stayed the Maharashtra government's move to rename Osmanabad district as `Dharashiv' following a petition filed by the Anti-Renaming Action Committee.
Counsel for the petitioner, M A Latif, contends that the names of cities and districts in India reflect the composite culture of the country and it is unthinkable to replace the name of say, Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir with any other name or Rampur in Uttar Pradesh.

Recently the state government renamed Osmanabad with its ancient name Dharasiva.The region in ancient times was ruled by the Satavahanas, the Yadavas, and in the medieval period by the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughals till 1724, when it passed on to the Nizam of Hyderabad.
In 1956 with the reorganisation of states, Osmanabad was transferred to Bombay state, and thence to Maharashtra in 1960.

He submitted the 1972 Gazetteer before the court according to which in 1962, Osmanabad was shown in Naldurg district of Hyderabad State.
Justice S B Mhase of the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay high court has stayed the renaming of Osmanabad as Dharashiv till January 12.
It also said the municipal councils of Osmanabad and Naldurg have rejected the proposal for renaming Osmanabad.

The Aurangabad bench of the Mumbai High Court has ordered the attachment of all movable and immovable properties as well as a freeze on all bank accounts of all members of the managing committees of the Nagpur, Wardha and Osmanabad district central cooperative banks and the Amravati urban cooperative bank.
The order also directed the state government to freeze all bank accounts and attach the moveable and immovable properties of six companies floated by Chairman of the Osmanabad DCCB Pavanraji Nimbalkar and his relatives through which he is alleged to have siphoned off Rs 176 crore by way of investments, lending and borrowings.
Vilas Humbe, the bench said: “The state government is directed to invoke the provisions of Section 95 of the Cooperative Societies Act, 1960, and all moveable and immovable properties of all members of the managing committee of the Osmanabad DCCB as well as the Nagpur, Wardha and Amravati DCCBs are attached.

The petition, filed by the Anti-Renaming of Osmanabad Action Committee, has challenged two notifications issued by the state Revenue and Forest Department and the Urban Development Department on January 1, 1999, renaming the district.
The committee contends that the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's decision to rename Osmanabad is guided by strong feelings of Hindu communalism and reflects its fundamentalist and parochial tendencies.
It alleges that the government, which has an antipathy towards past Muslim rulers and the religion itself, is bent on wiping out both from the history of the country.
