It may be prepared from osmiridium by fusing the alloy with zinc, the zinc being afterwards removed by distillation.
As an alternative the osmiridium is fused with zinc, the regulus treated with hydrochloric acid, and then heated with barium nitrate and barium peroxide.
After fusion, the mass is finely powdered and treated with cold dilute hydrochloric acid; and when action has finished, nitric and sulphuric acids are added, the precipitated barium sulphate removed, the liquid distilled and the osmium precipitated as sulphide.

It is the densest of the elements, and is resistant to tarnish and corrosion.
It occurs in platinum ores and as a free metal (see native metal) with iridium in a natural alloy called osmiridium, containing traces of platinum, ruthenium, and rhodium.
Its uses include pen points and light-bulb filaments; like platinum, it is a useful catalyst.

The first determination of the terrestrial osmium evolution line was made by Allegre and Luck (1980) on placer samples of the platinoid alloy osmiridium, whose crystallisation ages could be estimated.
Not only can osmiridium be analysed directly on the ion probe, but since its Re content is zero, no age correction was necessary to obtain initial ratios.
The data defined a single evolution line for all samples except the Urals, suggesting that the mantle system was effectively closed for Re)Os over Earth history (Fig.
