The goddess of the river, according to the chairman of Osogbo Heritage Council, Chief G.O. Oparanti,
Being the first king of the town, Larooye’s royal title – Ataoja – was derived from Atewogbeja (one who receives the god-fish on his palm) as a result of the belief that he received the fish sent by the river goddess on his palm.
The Osun Grove Support Group, Osun Osogbo Heritage Council and the National Commission for Museums and Monuments have since nurtured a common vision of preserving the land that represents the identity and totality of a people.

Osogbo, the capital city of Osun State, is one of the quiet cities in the federation with a population of about 280,000 people based on the 1991 census.
The current traditional ruler of the town, Oba Iyiola Oyewale Matanmi the third, said their period provided a basis of history of Osogbo, saying, "whether these spirits and fairies were aborigines, seen as real human beings with supernatural powers, or they were only imaginary beings is unimportant to the people of the town".
The competition is being supervised by the Osogbo Cultural Heritage Council and the NBC.

The soldiers have been in the troubled city of Osogbo and Ilesa since April 16, following violent demonstration that greeted the declaration of incumbent Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the winner of the April 14, gubernatorial election in the state.
At the wake of the protests, soldiers mainly from the 2nd Mechanized Division, Ibadan were deployed in the state to stem the orgy of violence.
But on Sunday, it was observed that the two towns of Osogbo and Ilesa were free of the usual road blocks thus giving indication that the soldiers have been withdrawn from the state.
