Present day Ossining is a vital community with a vast range in types of housing, from the very modest to the luxurious estates, and a diversified population enjoying a healthy racial and religious mix.
The Village of Ossining is situated within 3 square miles and according to the U.S. Bureau of Census, 2000 census 24,010 reside in this historic village on the Hudson River.

Ossining is a town located in Westchester County, New York.
It contains two villages, the Village of Ossining and part of Briarcliff Manor, the rest of which is located in the Town of Mount Pleasant.
In 1902 an area east of the village of Ossining, then known as Whitson's Crossing, was incorporated as the village of Briarcliff Manor.

At Ossining, near the river front, is the Sing Sing Prison, the best-known penitentiary in the United States.
The site of Ossining, originally a part of the Phillipse Manor, was first settled about 1700, taking the name of Sing Sing from the Sin Sinck Indians.
The village was incorporated in 1813, and was reincorporated, with enlarged boundaries and a considerably increased population, in 1906, the name being changed from Sing Sing to Ossining in 1901.

The municipalities of Sing Sing changed their name to Ossining in 1901, when goods from local manufacturers were boycotted because of the "Sing Sing" connection.

PURCHASE, NY - Two announced candidates for Ossining village trustee held a press conference late this afternoon to protest what they termed "unfair exclusion" from a candidates' forum conducted by the local Gannett daily, Journal News.
The publisher of the daily, Gary Sherlock, expressed in a letter to this reporter earlier this year that he supports the project, and believes it would be good for Ossining.
"Regardless of this slight, we will get the word out to Ossining residents that Ossining can and should walk from the Cappelli proposal and pursue a sane, intelligent plan for the development of the waterfront that will be an asset, and not a liability, to the residents of our community," said Gagliardi.
