The prison, which was built in the village specifically because of the marble quarries, began selling the stone quarried by the prisoners in the late 1820s.
James Smith, a prominent New York City lawyer built his country house of the local stone on an estate overlooking the Hudson River, extending east to Highland Avenue and south to the State Farm property (present-day Nelson Park).
With the construction of the rail line (1849), Ossining and other Hudson River communities were provided with reliable and fast transportation to New York City, spurring new development.
