Ossolineum was established in 1817 in the city of Lvov by Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński when Poland became divided between Russia, Prussia and Austria.
Ossolineum became a national museum, a library and a publishing house which collected pieces of art as well as manuscripts of literary works and published them.
Of note is the role Ossolineum played during the period when Poland lost its independence and the fact that the institution was founded on the initiative of private individuals and owing to their donations.

In the years of national bondage the Ossolineum published Monumenta Poloniae Historica, a critical edition of Samuel Bogumił Linde's Słownik Jezyka Polskiego (Dictionary of the Polish Language) and numerous other works from the fields of history, history of Poland, literary sciences and history of culture, important for the Polish science.
During that time the Ossolineum holdings were enriched by many new collections, including those of the Lubomirski family of Kruszyna, the Potocki family of Raj, and the Jabłonowski family of Bursztyn, as well as by numerous bequests made by Polish scholars.
The Ossolineum is one of the largest scientific libraries in Poland, second to none as far as the collections in the field of the humanities are concerned.

The Ossolińskis National Institute, widely known under the name of OSSOLINEUM, is the oldest existing Polish publishing house.

Old Maps of Silesia for Ossolineum Tomasz Niewodniczanski, Polish collector who has been living in Germany for more than three decades has offered 224 old maps of Silesia to the Wroclaw-based Ossolineum.
Thanks to the gift, the Ossolineum is now an owner of the biggest collection of maps of Silesia.
Niewodniczanski offered the Ossolineum only those maps of Silesia from 15-19th centuries, which the library was lacking.

The result has often been a split or fragmentation in the disposition of some personal papers and local institutional records between the Academy Library and state archives in Lviv.
To add further complexity to this problem, some important groups of personal papers and literary manuscripts were transferred to Kyiv, and approximately half of the Ossolineum manuscript collection was transferred to Wroclaw.
Special note should be made on the art division, located in the separate building, with its varied collections of drawings, prints, and other illustrative materials.

Providing legal advice to Narodowy Zakład Ossolineum - our law office together with our New York office was asked by Adolf Juzwenko, the director of Narodowy Zakład Ossolineum, to analyze its claims regarding restitution of a collection of 30 drawings by Albrecht Dürer which had been taken out of Poland during the Second World War.
These drawings were sold after the Second World War and placed in 12 different museums, among them in New York, Ottawa, Rotterdam, London and Washington.

 Archival Ucrainica in Poland
Mention has already been made of some of the manuscripts and archival materials that were evacuated from Lviv during the war and ended up in the Manuscript Division of the Biblioteka Narodowa, such as parts of the Baworowski and Czołowski collections, among others.
