Many Ostarbeiters perished in Germany because the German authorities ordered that "they should be worked to death." Others who were working in German factories were killed in Allied bombing raids.
The story of the Ostarbeiters, who were mostly from the territory of Reichskomissariat Ukraine (eastern Ukraine) is not known.
A total of 3 million Ostarbeiters were taken to Germany so Ukrainians constituted about 75 percent of the entire total.

Dass es uns gelungen ist, die uns zugewiesenen Ostarbeiter in verhältnismäßig kurzer Zeit auf den Stand zu bringen, den wir erreicht haben, beweist mir, dass ohne eine Regelung, wie wir sie vornehmen mussten und wie sie oben dargestellt wurde, ein Russeneinsatz, der auf baldmögliche Leistung abgestellt ist, überhaupt nicht durchgeführt werden kann.
In den Montagen wurden die Ostarbeiter abteilungsweise in Gruppen von ihren Arbeitsplätzen weggenommen und einer systematischen Umschulung in unserer Lehrwerkstätte unterzogen.
Ausserdem wurde er täglich 1 ½ Stunden auf seine Maschine einexerziert, aber nicht an der Produktionsmaschine in der Werkstatt, sondern an der Maschine in der Lehrlingsausbildungswerkstätte, genau nach denselben Grundsätzen, wie sie bereits für den Montagearbeiter dargestellt wurden.

He was quite well treated for a "Ostarbeiter".
The records show that he was arrested in May 1943 and spent 4 days (7 - 10 May) in prison in the city of Marburg.
The cause was not indicated,but it must have been a very minor one because usually "Ostarbeiter" were severely punished for even small infringements of the law.

Saturday, December 18, the Yushchenkos, including their daughters Sophia and Christine, have visited Oleksandr Tarasovych Lipovetskyi – the former ostarbeiter who worked with Kateryna Yushchenko’s parents in Germany and now lives in the village of Kobrynove, Cherkasy region.
He turned out to know and remember her parents very well, since Mykhaylo Chumachenko, Kateryna’s father, was a friend of him.
