Topic: Ostariophysi

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

  Alarm Pheromones in Fish
All fish known to have alarm substance were of the order Ostariophysi (Pfeiffer 1963) until Smith (1979) demonstrated a similar system in two species of darters, Etheostoma exile and E. nigrum (Perciformes: Percidae).
The Ostariophysan and Percid Alarm Pheromone Systems In the Ostariophysi, specialized club cells (alarm substance cells, or ASCs) on the epidermis outside of the protection of scales were identified by Pfeiffer (1960).
Thus, while an alarm system is not present only in schooling Ostariophysi, the reaction to alarm pheromone can change throughout the life of an individual, and among species, depending on the life history of the species.

Ostariophysi and their relatives account for three-fourths of all freshwater fish.
Great variation is found within the group, but almost all members have acute hearing due to some unusual bones called ‘Weberian Ossicles’.
Ostariophysi are generally predators or scavengers living close to the bottom in dark water.

Fishes in the major teleostean lineage Ostariophysi are well known for possessing a unique specialisation of the ear in form of the Weberian apparatus.
The other subgroup, the Anotophysi, lack otical specialisations, whereas in the sistergroup of the Ostariophysi, the clupeomorphs, a specialised ear has evolved in a different way.
We use another character complex to investigate the interrelationships within the Otocephala (Clupeomorpha + Ostariophysi) and present data on the ontogeny of the caudal skeleton in the genus Kneria (Anotophysi: Gonorynchiformes) and in the genus Candidia (Otophysi: Cypriniformes).

 Ostariophysi
The Ostariophysi represent a major division which has arisen from the salmonids and contains the majority of the modern world's freshwater fish.
The cyprinids are not apparently over-specialised fish in terms of physical adaptation yet they have radiated into virtually all freshwater habitat types except for mountain torrents and waters very poor in dissolved oxygen.
Of the three main groups of Ostariophysi, adaptive radiation has had its most far-reaching effects in the characoids and has produced a wide array of body forms even to the extent of producing characoid flying fish (Gasteropelicidae) which use their pectoral fins for propulsion whilst in the air.
