Chased and persecuted with utmost zeal were the services of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: officials of the State Police and the autonomous Police of the Province of Silesia, Border Guards and prison guards, as well as military settlers living on the eastern frontiers of the Republic of Poland.
Ostashkov is situated 180 km west of Kalinin.

The prisoners in Ostashkov were removed from the camp to the NKVD prison in Kalinin from 5 April 1940 onwards.
The task of the brigade in Ostashkov went much further – to gather "incriminating evidence" against prisoners, which was then to be passed to a non-judicial authority, the NKVD Special Conference, for consideration under administrative procedures.
Ostashkov – on the basis of lists received from Moscow, the prisoners were taken to the NKVD prison in Kalinin on 5 April 1940, where they were killed by shots to the back of the head in a specially prepared cell.

More than 15,000 Polish Officers were sent to NKVD (Soviet Secret Police) prison camps at Kozielsk, Starobielska and Ostashkov in the Soviet Union.
For several months, the Polish prisoners of war were interrogated by the NKVD about their political beliefs, family backgrounds, and education.

It was at three particular prisons in the confines of Russia that the beginning of the Katyn woods massacre came into being.
The three camps were named Kozielsk, Starobielsk, and Ostashkov and they held over fourteen thousand Polish prisoners-of-war behind their barbed wire and walls.
There were three thousand nine hundred and twenty prisoners at Starobielsk, four thousand five hundred at Kozielsk, and six thousand five hundred and sixty-seven at Ostashkov.

They seized some 250,000 Polish military personnel and sent over 20,000 army, navy, air force and frontier-guard officers to three prison camps in the Soviet Union: Kozielsk, Starobielsk, and Ostashkov.
These graves contained the bodies of the murdered officers from the Starobielsk and Ostashkov camps.
In 1992, the Russian President released to Poland secret documents, including the death sentences signed by Stalin and by the head of the NKVD at the time of the atrocities.

 The Polish "Katyn Massacre" Memorial site at Mednoye/Ymok, north of Tver, Russia.
The massacre and consequent burial site was finally admitted and disclosed by the USSR in April 1990, after 50 years shameful denial of the truth.
To this day there are diehards, Russians and others, who still say the Polish dead were all shot by the Nazis, and blamed on the Soviets; all evidence, including documents relating to the massacre, was fabricated to discredit the Soviet Union and the Communist Party.
These deluded individuals have never explained how the Poles, held prisoner in Ostashkov by the Soviets in 1940 and found buried in Mednoyne/Tver in 1991, were captured and shot by the Nazis who never held those parts of Russia at any time during WW2.
