Osteoglossids are carnivorous, often being specialized surface feeders.
They are excellent jumpers; it has been reported that Osteoglossum species have been seen leaping more than 6 feet (almost 2 metres) from the water surface to pick off insects from overhanging branches in South America, hence the nickname "water monkeys".
Arowanas have been rumored to capture prey as large as low flying bats and small birds.

But, as they grow, their colors become similar to the silver arowana, Osteoglossum bicirrhosum.
With the exception, their fins are a brilliant blue color, where as the bicirrhosum sports a more reddish fin coloration.

Another attraction of the arowana to aquarium hobbyists is that they grow quite large in captivity, at least in relation to most tropical fish species kept in the home.
Osteoglossum are mouth brooders and incubate their fry in their mouths at least until the yolk sac is absorbed, perhaps even briefly thereafter.
That, of course, is easy for you or me to say, sitting in an armchair reading FAMA, but when you are standing in a wobbly canoe with your stomach growling, trying to harpoon your dinner, your perspective would no doubt be substantially altered, not to speak of your inability to distinguish brooders from non-brooders.

The fl arawana (Osteoglossum ferreirai Kanazawa 1966) from the Rio Negro is distinctively coloured as a juvenile; however, adults are "nearly identical" in colouration to the arawana (Howells 1992).
An Osteoglossum species was reported from a freshwater reservoir in O'ahu, Hawai'i in 1988-1989, but no specimen was collected and the species was not identified.

The commonest is probably Osteoglossum bicirrhosum which lives throughout the floodplain even entering the forest at high water.
It is probably less abundant than Osteoglossum bicirrhosum, with which it shares similar habits.
Note the size of the eye and the characteristic 'draw-bridge' mouth.

In the meantime, my Arowana is approximately 7 months old and on 35 cm grown up, maximum size in the nature: up to 130 cm, remains however clearly smaller in the aquarium.

A large fish, such as the Osteoglossum, makes a startling display of which any aquarist could be justifiably proud.
The main physical difference between the Scleropages and Osteoglossum genusis that the latter has a longer dorsal and anal fin so much so that it appears to be joined together from far.
They are the Black (Osteoglossum ferreirai), the silver (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum), and the giant Arapaima giga.
