Crocodilian Species - Dwarf Crocodile (Osteolaemus tetraspis)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Osteolaemus means "bony throat", derived from osteon (Greek for "bone") + laimos (Greek for "throat"), referring to the extensive osteoderms (bony plates) found in the neck and belly scales
An increasing local awareness is necessary for the future of Osteolaemus where it is threatened in the wild.

The smallest is the broad-fronted, or dwarf, crocodile, Osteolaemus tetraspis, of West Africa, which seldom exceeds lengths of 1.5 m (5 ft); the largest is probably the saltwater crocodile, Crocodylus porosus, of southeastern Asia, with a length of up to 6 m (20 ft), although some reports give up to 9 m (30 ft).
The 11 species that exist today belong to three genera: Tomistoma, the false gavial of the Malaya Peninsula, Sumatra, and western Borneo; Osteolaemus, the broad-fronted crocodile of West Africa; and Crocodylus (nine species), the true crocodile.
Several species of crocodile, including the American crocodile C. acutus, are in danger of extinction, their existence threatened by habitat loss and hide hunters.

It was a crocodylid, but there’s no indication that it was anything to do with the mekosuchines: instead, there are reasons for thinking that it was an osteolaemine.
If this is all valid, then little Osteolaemus is a sorry remnant of a once diverse group that included several enormous species.
The ‘true’ ‘Crocodylus’ robustus was a broad-snouted species sharing a list of skull characters with Osteolaemus, so it doesn’t belong in the genus Crocodylus and needs a new name (hence the use of quotes).
