  Osterley Park - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Osterley Park is a mansion set in a large park of the same name.
Two hundred years later the manor house was falling into disrepair, when it came into the ownership of Sir Francis Child, a goldsmith turned banker, as a result of a mortgage default.
The grounds of Osterley Park were used for the training of the first members of the Local Defence Volunteers, who later became the British Home Guard in 1940.

Sir Thomas Gresham, commercial agent and financial adviser to Elizabeth I, bought the manor of Osterley in 1562 and by 1576 replaced the existing farmhouse with 'a faire and stateley brick house'.
His wife was equally involved and she lived on at Osterley for 10 years after his death.
By the beginning of the 19th century, Osterley was no longer a main residence and, apart from a few brief periods of occupation, would not be so again.

Notes: The station was opened as Osterley for Spring Grove but this was soon shortened to Osterley.
There is some confusion over the name, with the board at the front of the station showing Osterley Park and Spring Grove but the platform signs just showing Osterley.
As London expanded during the 20th century the station was unable to cope with increased passenger numbers so a new larger station was built on the Great West Road.
