July 21, 1921 — The German battleship Ostfriesland, a prize of war, was sunk by heavy bombs dropped by Army bombers in the last of a series of tests to determine the effectiveness of air weapons against ships and the means by which ship design and construction might counter their destructive capability.
Tests against Ostfriesland began on July 20, when Navy and Marine Corps planes dropped 52 bombs on the ship, and ended dramatically the next day when Mitchell's Martin bombers came in to deliver the fatal blow with eleven 1,000- and 2,000-pounders.
The significance of the tests was hotly debated, and became a bone of contention between a generation of Army and Navy air officers, but the one firm conclusion that could be drawn was that aircraft in unopposed attack could, indeed, sink capital ships.

Popular lore had it that pro-battleship admirals wept to see the ship go down, but the full power of planes against capital ships would not be felt until 1941, with the British attack on Taranto, and the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor and on the battleships HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse.
