Fresh Water Ostracod Crustaceans: Introduction with photomicrographs of ostracods (Cypris, etc.).
Ostracods are very similar in appearance, making it less than easy for the non-expert to distinguish one species from another -- or even one genus from another.
The ceaseless activity of ostracods can make them something of a nuisance to the microscopist when, under the microscope, they disturb the observation of some other creature.
This ostracod crustacean (possibly Cypris) is shown in typical feeding mode, with its shell opened to allow the mouth parts to graze along a filament of Oedogonium, propelled by two pairs of legs bearing long claws.

Ostracod - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Ostracods are small crustaceans, typically around one mm in size, but varying between 0,2 to 30 mm, laterally compressed and protected by a bivalve-like, chitinous or calcareous valve or "shell".
Ecologically ostracods can be part of the zooplankton, or (most commonly) they are part of the benthos, living on or inside the upper layer of the sea floor.
Ostracods have been particularly useful for the biozonation of marine strata on a local or regional scale, and they are invaluable indicators of paleo-environments because of their widespread occurrence, small size, easily-preservable generally-moulted calcified bivalve carapaces, the valves are a commonly found microfossil.

Marine Invertebrates - Ostracods   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Ostracods (ostracodes="having a shell"), also known as seed shrimp, are crustaceans that range in size from less than 0.1 cm to 3.2 cm and are enclosed in a hinged, shield-like plate (carapace) consisting of two valves.
Some ostracods are capable of swimming, employing their antennae for locomotion, but many species simply crawl over the ocean bottom or burrow into it.
After fertilization, developing ostracod eggs are either deposited on the substrate or brooded between the female's valves until they hatch as juveniles.

 Ostracod distribution in PE—96—1
Ostracod abundance is very much different in these three parts of the section, being obviously dependant on the type of sediment (Fig.
This relationship between ostracod abundance and sediment type refers probably both to climatic reasons and peculiarities in the rate of sedimentation during formation of the sediment, and preservation of shells after deposition.
Although high sand fraction content in a sample tends to be inversely proportional to the ostracod abundance, the first abundantly fossiliferous sample is related to the level with the highest content of sand fraction in a sample (206 g per litre).

Ostracods are found in most habitats but are especially abundant and rich in the sea.

A preliminary analysis by Shine and Martin (1988) indicated that ostracod Crustacea ('seed shrimps') appeared to be an important component of the zoobenthos, numerically comprising almost 60% of the invertebrates in the deepest parts of the loch.
Ostracods were collected both qualitatively, by dredging, and quantitatively, with a 15 x 15 cm Ekman grab, and a custom-built 10.3 cm diameter gravity corer.
It is clear that ostracod densities are considerably higher in the South Basin than in the North, and this is believed to reflect the higher sedimentation rate of the South Basin, coupled with quantitative increases in the levels of organic inputs.

A relatively high density of the total number of ostracods is found in the patches of moderately coarse sediments near the channels, where the living specimens are also found in high density making up 16 to 63% of the total number of specimens, and suggest a high productivity of ostracods in these areas.
The ostracod density is low in the northern brackish water area and high in the southern marine water area.
Fluctuations of the indices in the Enshu-nada area, together with the occurrence of allochthonous ostracods, may suggest the strong sieving effect of the wave base and the coastal current on the accumulation of dead ostracod carapaces.

Abstract: Marine terraces along the coast of the tectonically uplifted southern Boso Peninsula (Honshu, Japan) are formed by sediments deposited during the Jomon (Flandrian) transgression from 9,000 to 5,000 yr B. Sixty samples of these sediments were taken in the southern Boso, and 20 samples of recent sediments were collected in the adjacent Tateyama Bay.
Six fossil ostracod biofacies and six recent ostracod biofacies were delineated using cluster analysis and principal component analysis.
Comparison of the distribution of fossil and recent ostracods was used to infer the environments of deposition during the Jomon transgression.

Investigations of the physiological basis of the high resistance to hypoxia and hydrogen sulphide show that the ostracod is indeed able to oxidize penetrating sulphide to non-toxic thiosulphate and sulphite and to eliminate the oxidation products rather quickly.
This detoxification, however, is not effective enough to prevent an increase of sulphide in the ostracod's body.

Ostracod faunal response to global climate change during the Late Ordovician and Early Silurian
Ostracods are small aquatic crustaceans with a bivalved calcium carbonate carapace.
Throughout the Ordovician ostracods were global in their distribution, but their diversity and abundance were severely curtailed during the Late Ordovician and Early Silurian and this is linked to a fundamental reorganisation of the Earth climate system.

In a survey for conservation of non-marine aquatic systems, the ostracod compositions of 43 water bodies sampled in central Spain were analysed by multivariate ordination (DCA) and classification (TWINSPAN) methods, showing a clear division in lake typology.
The wide variety of life modes and habitat requirements of non-marine ostracod species yields assemblages of species of value as ecological indicators.
Between these two extremes, the study of ostracod assemblages permits the distinction, on a finer scale, of a gradient of lake types with different disturbance conditions, resulting from a combination of hydrological, climatic, chemical and anthropogenic factors.
