OSTRACODERM   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Ostracoderms are any of several groups of extinct, primitive, jawless fishes that were covered in an armor of bony plates.
Unlike invertebrates that use cilliated motion to move food, ostracoderms used their muscular gill pouch to create a suction that pulled in small and slow moving prey.
The ostracoderms are placed in the Class Agnatha along with the extant Subclass Cyclostomata, which includes lampreys and hagfishes.

The head armor is especially well developed in Hemicyclaspis, an ostracoderm of the "Cephalapsis" type, in which the head is flattened and expanded into a large
Ostracoderms lacked the paired (pectoral and pelvic) fins of more advanced fish.
In some cases, small spines were present at the points where paired fins develop in higher fishes.

These ostracoderms represent many evolutionary lines and are generally more "fish-like" than their surviving relatives.
One line of "ostracoderms" developed the first opposible jaw by the modification of one of the cartilaginous arches in their gills.
These early jawed fish, appearing in the Silurian, are known as placoderms and gave rise in their turn to the Chondrichthyes (sharks and rays) and the Osteichthyes (bony fish) in the Devonian.

This allowed the advancement from cilia to the evolution of tooth plates in some agnathans, although filter feeding is still employed.
The next group to consider is the ostracoderms, which are jawless but well armoured vertebrates.
There are 4 main orders within the ostracoderm group.

Anaspids differ from most other "ostracoderms" by their dermal skeleton not forming a massive headshield, although their head is covered by both large bony plates and minute scales.
Also, contrary to most other "ostracoderms", they have a rather slender and laterally compressed body, with the gill openings extending behind the eyes in a slanting row, as in lampreys.
Current phylogenies, however, imply that anaspids, along with other "ostracoderms", are more closely related to the gnathostomes than to lampreys.
