  TFBA - Qumran Ostracon
Dated to year two of the revolt, the ostracon is the first writing to be recovered from Qumran since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in the middle of the last century.
The ostracon was broken at a critical point and scholars disagree as to the proper translation.
Cross and Eshel believe the ostracon records a gift of property to the Yahad, or “Community,” the term the writers of the Dead Sea Scrolls used to describe themselves.

 The Nbj Measure
Ostracon no 75 clearly records the amount of work carried out in the excavation of the tomb, however, and there is no difficulty in the view that the nbj measurements all refer to the volumes of rock which had already been calculated.
The latter ostracon refers to the work done in the wmt or doorway, which Hayes took to mean the front end of the main axial passage of the tomb, 4.58 ms high and 2.32 ms wide.
From ostracon no 75, we find that 3 nbj of stone were removed in the width of the passage, when the drift-way of height 'h' was enlarged along a 'depth' of 3 cubits, out to a width which we have taken to be 4 cubits.

According to early reports a third ostracon was found with the first two, containing only traces of ink; this third ostracon has not been published.
A press release announced that the ostracon had disproved the theory of University of Chicago professor Norman Golb of a Jerusalem origin of the scrolls, mentioning Golb by name.
The Qumran ostracon, KhQ1, speaks of “figs” in the immediately preceding line 7 according to both Cross/Eshel and Yardeni, followed by what Cross/Eshel read as “olives” and Yardeni suggests is “palms”.

One of these is known as the Temple Ostracon, which resides in the Israel Museum, Jerusalem.
Another ostracon referenced by the Biblical Archaeology Review (November/December 1997) is a tax receipt written on a clay tablet in respect of a subscription of 3 shekels to the House of the Lord.
It comes from much the same period as the Temple Ostracon, when the Jewish people were obliged to contribute towards the House of Yahweh's infrastructure by way of a Temple tax.

 House of Yahweh Ostracon
The House of Yahweh Ostracon (a writing on pottery also known as the “House of God Ostracon”) was discovered in Arad, an ancient Judean city.
Written in ancient Hebrew and dated to the early 6th century BC, it is considered to be one of the earliest references to the Temple in Jerusalem outside of the biblical accounts.
The House of Yahweh Ostracon reads, in part, as follows: "To my lord Elyashib, may the Lord seek your welfare…and as to the matter which you command me-it is well; he is in the House of Yahweh [God]."

Another major inscription that the IAA has found to be a forgery is the so-called Three Shekel ostracon (an ostracon is a piece of pottery used as a kind of ancient notepaper), its ink inscription purporting to be a receipt for a contribution of three shekels to Solomon’s Temple.
The ostracon, which belongs to collector Shlomo Moussaieff, has been examined by Tel Aviv University archaeologist and petrologist Yuval Goren, who told the New Yorker magazine that the ostracon was covered by a tell-tale film of paraffin.
According to some accounts, it was applied by an early owner of the ostracon to protect the writing.

Naveh admits that this ostracon "was found among the remains of one of the earliest Israelite settlements in Canaan" and may "even" have been "scratched by an Israelite settler".
In other words, what I am suggesting is that this ostracon be considered Israelite and therefore written in a proto-Hebrew script which is identical to the Proto-Cananaanite script.
There is no reason to take one of the errors as diagnostic and ignore the other; and avoiding the totally incoherent jumble of letters as well as the sloppy ductus to make some sort of point (what, political?) is irresponsible.

The other day I wrote about a potsherd that some claim refers to Goliath.
First of all, I should say that I was not personally involved in either the discovery or the publication of this ostracon.
As I wrote, I'm not totally convinced of the reading, but IF the ostracon really DOES read ")LWT" and "WLT" and IF these really are variants of "Goliath", it would mean that this name was in use among the Philistines of Gath during the 10th and 9th centuries.
