It is bordered by the Towns of Oswego, Minetto, and Scriba to the west, south, and east, respectively, and by Lake Ontario to the north.
Oswego is home to the port of Oswego and once was a major railroad hub for the New York Central, Lackawanna/Erie Lackawanna, and NY Ontario and Western.

The Oswego River Basin is particularly vulnerable to flooding in the early spring when a combination of factors which may increase runoff occur simultaneously.
Flows from the Clyde River basin reach the canal quickly and during periods of high flows, may prevent flows from Cayuga and Seneca Lakes from being discharged.

The river averages 400-500 feet across in most areas and is approximately one mile long from the dam to Lake Ontario.
