  Taieri Gorge Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is New Zealand's longest tourist railway and stretches along the former Otago Central Railway from the 4 km peg on ONTRACK's Taieri Branch, 18 km west of Dunedin, to Middlemarch, a distance of some 60 kilometres.
The Otago Excursion Train Trust was formed in 1978 to operate excursions on the Otago Central Railway line.
The Trust then stepped in, in partnership with Dunedin City Council, to form the Taieri Gorge Railway Limited to purchase the line as far as Middlemarch, along with some locomotives to operate trains.

 History of the Taieri Gorge Railway
It's history is both the history of the Otago Central Railway and of the Otago Excursion Train Trust, which ran it's first excursion train on the railway in 1979 and became so succesful that they bought 60 kms of the railway when it closed in 1990, forming todays company and its operations.
By the end of the mid-1870s the gold rushes in Otago were well past and attention was being focused on the agriculture and pastoral potentials of Dunedin's hinterland.
In 1995 the close relationship between the City of Dunedin and the Otago Excursion Train Trust was cemented with the formation of the Taieri Gorge Railway Limited, a Local Authority Trading Enterprise jointly owned by the City and the Trust, which now operates the Taieri Gorge Railway with assistance of the Trust's volunteer members.

 Railways of New Zealand: Otago Central Branch Railway
From its inception in 1978, the Otago Excursion Train Trust, of Dunedin, ran regular excursions on the line, particularly in the Taieri Gorge, and the Blossom Festival trips to Alexandra became a regular annual feature.
From 1987 the OETT began the operation of a daily passenger excursion to Pukerangi, the Taieri Gorge Limited, using its own newly constructed passenger cars with the regular OETT carriage stock.
The NZRLS party left the train at Clyde on the Saturday and returned the following Monday; while the train was in Clyde, a local excursion was run for the public of the area.

 Dj 3107 (1210) - Taieri Gorge Railway
DJ3107 started life as Dj 1210, and was one of a number of Dj class locomotives selected to haul the Southerner passenger train and wear a special colour scheme.
After withdrawal, 3107 was one of 5 Dj class locomotives initially purchased by the Otago Excursion Train Trust for use on the Taieri Gorge Railway, on the just closed Otago Central Branch.
3107 is named "Otago Daily Times", and is now painted in the TGR's own livery, which is a cross between the 1970's "Southerner" livery and standard Dj blue.

With the decrease in rail traffic, the station now serves more functions that the one for which it was originally designed.
It is still the city's railway station, catering for the Otago Excursion Train Trust's Taieri Gorge Railway tourist service.
Much of its ground floor is now used as a restaurant, and the upper floor is used as an art gallery and as the home to the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.

Public train running for most of the year was diesel only after it proved impossible to run JA 1260 at Easter.
During the annual winter excursion season when the Otago Excursion Train Trust carriages were brought up to Christchurch, WPR members helped raise funds for the Society by volunteering as staff for the buffet car and train cleaning.
The Society's DG locomotives participated in the 125 Cavalcade and its carriages were chartered for use in some of the trips that ran during the festival week.

Thousands of tonnes of farm produce and fruit and scores of livestock were railed to Dunedin and north, while supplies for Central Otago arrived by return train accompanied by regular passenger services.
In 1979 the newly formed Otago Excursion Train Trust ran its first public excursion train from Dunedin to Cromwell, the first of thousands of trips showing the unique scenery of Central Otago to tourists formalised in 1987 when The Taieri Gorge Limited service became a regular tourist train.
Today the famous yellow train has a modernised look while still retaining the colour for which it is known.

The Dx locomotive heading the train sports the light blue livery from the 1990s, while the Dc running as second locomotive is still in the "fruit-salad" livery used in the 1980s, with the engine's number displayed prominently on the long hood.

Trains operate on the 6 km branch line from Glenbrook to Fernleigh on Sundays and most holidays.

Passenger services have also included the Invercargill-Lyttelton express train to link with the inter-island ferries (such was the level of service, a parcel sent from Dunedin on this express could be delivered in Wellington the next day), railcars and the South Island Limited, a modern version of which still runs today.
Stations and lines in Otago and Southland were administered from NZR offices in the station building while public facilities included a bookstall, refreshment rooms, waiting rooms, toilets, booking office, and luggage and parcels counters.

This locomotive was built in 1917 and was the first Ab to reach Auckland, replacing the A class Pacific’s on the express train duties and had the honour of hauling the Royal train for the Prince of Wales out of Auckland in 1920.
In September 1959 Ab663 was transferred to the South Island and after an overhaul at Hillside workshops it was based in Dunedin working the South Island main trunk, the Otago Central railway and the many other branch lines.

 Fight to keep rail heritage on track
It is a joint initiative of the Otago Excursion Train Trust and the Dunedin City Council, while the Port Craig tramway involves two local trusts and the Southland Regional Council.
Prominent among them are the Otago Central Railway Track, a three-day cycling track along the old railway route from Middlemarch to Clyde, the Rimutaka Incline outside Wellington and the Piako County Tramway at Waiorongamai,Te Aroha.

They are a $120,000 donation to the Otago Excursion Train Trust, a $35,000 donation to the Otago Employment Trust’s Youth Works programme, and a donation of $30,000 to Bowls New Zealand.
The train has been doing the Taieri Gorge run for the past 26 years and its locomotives were built 34 years ago.
The Community Trust of Otago donation would be used mostly to pay for some of the administration costs of the project.

DE 1337 is owned by the Otago Excursion Train Trust, who operate the Taieri Gorge Railway.
After withdrawal DE 1337 was originally purchased by the Otago Polytechnic who planned to recreate a ship's engine room using the engine, however 1337 was acquired by the OETT around 1990.

The Rail Trail connects four Central Otago plains and valleys: the Strath Taieri with the township of Middlemarch, the Maniototo with Ranfurly at the centre, Ida Valley with Oturehua and the Manuherikia area with Alexandra and Clyde.
In spring, a Blossom Festival excursion operated between Dunedin and Alexandra and at Easter, a day excursion train to A and P Shows in Middlemarch and Waipiata.
The Otago Hunt Club held a hunt at the time of the Middlemarch Show and participants would come up by train with their horses on the Friday before Easter - just as today people bring their bikes on the train to ride the Rail Trail.

In the North Island, there are the main line from Auckland to Wellington which runs west of the central volcanoes, a main line to the east coast at Tauranga and a number of branch lines.
I believe they are using the similar rules of allocating "seats" as airlines, buses and trains are.
