Provinces of New Zealand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Provinces in New Zealand were used from 1841 until the Abolition of the Provinces Act came into force on November 1, 1876.
Their only visible function today is their use to determine, with the exception of the Chatham Islands, Northland, and South Canterbury, the geographical boundaries for anniversary day public holidays.
Some of the names of former provinces and current regions have a tendency to be preceded by "the", as, for example, in this extract from a recent Court of Appeal judgment: "At trial, there was evidence of a sticker ostensibly from the Manawatu on the courier bag."

There can be no doubt that the sources of occupation in a new country such as Otago, with an abundance of land at a cheap rate, are almost unlimited; but we should like to see more cabin passengers, and a larger supply of capital, to promote the development of the resources of the Provinces.
In the older settled portions of the Province such as the Tiori or Tokomairiro, of course it is more diffucult to be obtained than in the less thickly inhabited districts; but the former have the usual advantages of age in having schools, churches, and something of an approach to roads.
When the Strathallen arrived in Otago in 1858, after a voyage on which her master, Captain John Todd, spent most of his time rip-roaring drunk, the whole crew struck and was imprisoned for its common sense.

Flood basalt provinces represent the largest volcanic events known, and have punctuated the history of Earth at irregular intervals coincident with periods when continents are breaking up and the fragments drifting apart.
Until recently the eruptions that formed the flood basalts were thought to be fairly gentle, passive events resulting in effusion of lava flows that piled up to form broad sheets and shields.
Here, continental break-up was preceded by rifting and rapid outpouring of Karoo Large Igneous Province (LIP) flood basalts, with the complex interplay between volcanic, sedimentary and tectonic processes during this break-up event recorded in superb, regional scale outcrop along the Drakensberg Escarpment of South Africa and Lesotho.
