Following is a short excerpt from koryu.com (Koryu Books) regarding a commentary made at the (1997) 15th Nihon Kobudo Taikai in Japan, given by Otake Risuke; honbu shihan of Tenshin shoden katori shinto ryu:
"...Otake Risuke, chief instructor of the Katori Shinto-ryu, explained the importance of using the blade edge of the sword for blocking an attacking sword (the back edge is made of soft metal that can more easily break)."
