  Otakon ® 2008 Announces US Debut of JAM Project - Anime News Network
Otakon 2008 will be held from 8- 10 August 2008 at the Baltimore Convention Center and First Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.
Otakon celebrates popular culture as a gateway to deeper understanding of Asian culture, and has grown along with the enthusiasm for anime, manga, video games, and music from the Far East.
Otakon is a membership-based convention sponsored by Otakorp, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based, 501(c)3 educational non-profit whose mission is to promote the appreciation of Asian culture, primarily through its media and entertainment.

Otakon 2002 was held July 26th through 28th in the Baltimore Convention Center, located in Baltimore, Maryland's, Inner Harbor.
Otakon will presumably be held again next year in the same location at the same time of year.
Otakon felt like an old skool con since I did a lot of stuff on my own, stayed and worked with the same crew from the days of yore, and did a lot more con events than I have recently.

Otakon was the convention I'd been planning for when I was doing the initial planning for the workshop: Otakon was my first anime convention and as I start attending more cons, Otakon remains the "main event" of the year for a number of reasons.
Among other things, Otakon's location and large size make it a good focal point for other modelers on the east coast.

 Yes, But Does It Make Coffee? - Otakon?
As I was painfully reminded at the last Otakon (not to mention Katsucon), being an introvert, I need friends who are willing to hang out with me and do stuff to an enjoy a con, or at least willing to talk to me between events and decompress, perhaps eating together.
Otakon was bad because I didn't, and what was worse, none of the activities were very interesting.
I dislike Otakon, but if you come to any of the GCOM conventions or TCEP I'll happily inflict games on you.

August 7, 2006: Otakon after con report and pictures, the good, the typical, and the trainwrecks....
I have come to the conclusion that the focus for each con is completely different and to compare them as a whole would be impossible without adding an insane amount of personal opinion about each.
AX focus is on the industry, industy guests like directors of major anime series/movies, japanese and english VAs, character designers, manga artists, etc. Where as the focus for Otakon seems to be the fans.

Otakon had some pretty cool badges, marred only by the fact that Chiaki wasn't a choice for regular attendees, and that mine came out crooked (death to Duo Maxwell!).
The project manager for CPM Manga, he gets a special mention for letting me have one of the Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit's Tale graphic novels since I was going to combust otherwise (I did answer the trivia question correctly, so it wasn't entirely pity-motivated!).
He also earns points for being upbeat, and inviting fan interaction despite the Manga Roundtable being scheduled practically at the end of Otakon (and let's face it, all of us were feeling a little punchy by then).

Otakon is traditionally one of the biggest and best anime gatherings in the east coast and this year was no different.
My mind was now at peace…having spent most of the day at Otakon and being stressed over the car I decided to stay uptown for the evening and meet up with an old college buddy of mine.
This is were the excitement of everything that is Otakon really shines through as people applaud and cheer for the new titles being announced.

Of course, the first reason is because of Otakon itself, which has had a paid attendance of over 20,000 for the past four years and will almost certainly will again this year (let’s go for 25,000 this year, since con attendance seems to be increasing generally).
I only have half the unique visitors as they had in their 2007 guidelines, but they also said that it was only guidelines and not a requirement.
Despite having the number of pre-registrations drop for the 2nd straight year (there were almost 3000 fewer pre-registrations in 2007 than 2005), Otakon 2007 once again continued the streak of every convention breaking the previous convention’s attendance record.

And kudos to the otakon staff, who, regardless i was asking something like a groupie looking for a rock star ("Yeah, he knows me, he tell me to look for him here"), were really nice.
I did reach the LG boot too late as they were in a webcomic panel, so I did reach the place and see the end of the panel.
I wasnt even aware of such event, I know that Fred G. was in the convention but not entire sure that a entire panel will be dedeicated for him, however, the last year their presentations always gather a damn huge crow and controling the otaku mob can be damn tricky.

Brian's Otakon 2002 Wrap-Up Right off the bat, I'd like to express much gratitude to Kei Blue of Studio Ironcat, Carl Gustav Horn and Elena Ontiveros of Viz, Frank Pannone of Central Park Media, and Joel Baral and Amy Forsyth of TOKYOPOP.
All of them were marvelously friendly and helpful and seemed more than happy to spend a few minutes talking manga with some schlub with a website who thinks he's a journalist.
All in all, Otakon definitely put the lie to the old stereotype that otaku are antisocial.

The person that was with me at the con a while back tried to buy older items at the Otakon booth, specifically the long sleeve fl t-shirt, and was told that they were not for sale.

Otakon X promised to be an amazing convention, and from what I can tell, it most certainly was.
Otakon managed to beat out Anime Expo for attendance this year at more than 17,000 after several years of coming close.
Otakon was definitely fun in 2003, and promises to be again in 2004.

Otakon made a change to its policy which basically doesn't allow for re-imbursement for personal equipment.
Tsuki the Otakon panels lady said I should drop him a line because he is interested in putting some of his controllers out on the floor.

Read (and re-read before the con) Otakon's page on con policies, not limited to weapon's policy, line etiquette, and disruptive behavior (aka "why it's a bad idea to randomly start smacking people with a yaoi paddle").

I'm writing this nine months after Otakon 2000, so this description is going to be vague at best.
We were there primarily because the theme for Otakon 2000 was serial experiments lain, my and Saalon's favorite anime series of all time.
Boa also did a concert at Otakon, and we slid into some seats just in time to hear them play "Duvet," which was quite an experience.

Anime East last spring was a lot bigger than Otakon, with more events, more panels, and a bigger dealers' room.
But I had more fun at Otakon because a lot more of my friends came, and we were able to more effectively take advantage of what was offered.
The biggest things missing from Otakon that were present at Anime East were a large dealer presence and a large commercial presence, with many companies having large booths or taking out entire rooms (like Pioneer) and showing a lot of commercial pre-release videos.

Some call it 'The Gathering of the Geeks,' but to local anime fans it is simply the 14th time that the Otakon gathering has been held at the Convention Center in Baltimore.
Some of those in attendance at Otakon Saturday said anime has been a way for them to get in touch with other people of like interests.
Otakon will be back at the Convention Center for the 15th time next year with an event organizers expect to be their biggest yet.
