	Otakou - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The settlement of Otakou lies within the boundaries of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand.
		It is located 25 kilometres from the city centre at the eastern end of Otago Peninsula, close to the entrance of Otago Harbour.
		Otakou is located close to Taiaroa Head, the site of an albatross colony and other wildlife such as seals and penguins.

		Otakou means “the place where the red earth, or red ochre, abounds”.
		Thus Otago was the Ngai Tahu pronunciation of the standard (northern) Maori Otakou and in this form was adopted by the early whalers and, later, by the Scottish settlers in the south.
		It should be noted that the name Otakou appeared on the early maps, showing that the surveyors followed the northern mode of spelling.

		The Otakou purchase followed several weeks of discussions and the agreement recorded in the deed, signed on 31 July 1844, transferred a clearly defined block to the New Zealand Company for the sum of 2400.
		The proclamation also provided that a tenth of the land "of fair average value as to position and quality" was to be conveyed to the Crown for "public purposes, especially the future benefit of the aborigines".
		Colonel Wakefield decided to be present at the signing of the deed and travelled down to Otakou, with Symonds, George Clarke Jr, sub-protector of aborigines, and the land commissioner, William Spain.

	Student Research, Marine Science, Otago University , New Zealand
		Intertidal populations of the burrowing ghost shrimp Callianassa filholi Milne-Edwards, 1878 were studied to identify aspects of the species' biology and ecology and to assess its role in the benthic macrofauna community.
		The Callianassa filholi population at Otakou showed temporal variation in population distribution, and a mean population density of 16 shrimp m-2.
		Sexually mature animals dominated the population throughout the year, and breeding occurred from the beginning of winter to the middle of summer.

	KARETAI, or JACKY WHITE - 1966 Encyclopaedia of New Zealand
		Karetai was born in Otago in 1781 and was the son of Te Ihutakara and Kakatuaheka.
		He was a cousin of Taiaroa and at the time of European settlement was paramount chief at Otakou.
		Karetai died on 30 May 1860 and is buried in the Otakou cemetery, where a monument marks his grave.

		Abstract The Otakou area on the Otago Peninsula, New Zealand has extensive cockle beds which may be exposed to faecal contamination from several sources.
		Shellfish and sediments from four sites at Otakou were sampledmonthly from March to August 1988 and tested for faecal coliforms, Salmonella, Shigella, Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio para-haemolyticus, and enteroviruses.
		It was concluded that the Otakou area is subjected to sporadic faecal contamination and that the presence of faecal coliform bacteriadid notprovide an adequate indication of the presence of viruses.
