		Otani Yoshitsugu is well known in Japan for two main aspects: his leprosy, and his friendship.
		Yoshitsugu was at the head of about 600 men, with another 4000 or so under Toda Shigemasa, Hiratsuka Tamehiro, Otani Yoshikatsu (his son), and Kinoshita Yoritsugu (his nephew).
		Yoshitsugu suspected something, and thus called for his troops to position themselves so as to prepare for a possible attack from their flanks.

	The World's Greatest Judo Competitors
		In 1906, Akira Otani (157 cm, 89 kg) was born in Hiroshima prefecture.
		Otani died on Feb 2, 1963 in Kobe, Japan while refereeing a match between Soviet and Japanese teams of an apparent heart attack, he was 56.

		Before the battle of Sekigahara, Hideaki happened to be in Osaka and acted as though he would go along with Mitsunari even though he had intended to betray him having secretly communicated with Ieyasu for an eventual betrayal.
		Cautious for knowing Hideaki held ill feelings, Mitsunari and Otani Yoshitsugu offered Hideaki the position of kampaku until Toyotomi Hideyori grow old enough to rule himself and two additional domains around Osaka upon the victory.
		Hideaki then ordered attack into Otani troop and while this attack was beaten back temporalily, rest of samurai who promised betrayal turned and attacked and the battle was over in a day with Mitsunari's force being wiped out.

	The Battle of Sekigahara
		On General Ii's left flank, samurai under Kyoguku, Todo, and Terasawa thundered into Otani Yoshitsugu's combat veterans at the western edge of the valley.
		General Otani Yoshitsugu was not surprised by Kobayakawa's lack of movement, for he had suspected treachery all along.

	The Final Showdown
		Another 2,100 samurai under Toda, Hiratsuka and the aging Otani Yoshitsugu defended the western edge of the valley floor.
		Lord Ishida positioned Otani Yoshimatsu's 3,500 battle-hardened samurai on a small heavily wooded hill overlooking Fuwa from the north to protect Yoshitsugu's right flank.
		Within hours, the lush terrain around Otani's highly trusted command would become a bloody killing ground and the site of the most crucial stage of the impending battle.

		Mitsunari was not much of a general, but he excelled in administrative affairs, and fortunately for him this was recognized by Hideyoshi.
		When in 1592, Hideyoshi decided against going to Korea himself, Mitsunari, along with Otani Yoshitsugu, Mashita Nagamori, and others, went to assist the commander Ukita Hideie as Chiefs of Staff.
