Otello (1986)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Zeffirelli's OTELLO is far better than the usual, but is, if I may say so under IMDb guidelines, still hampered by a curious mixture of unfounded arrogance, cautious reverence and imaginative timidity.
OTELLO benefits from this concentration because it is such an inexorable, claustrophobic piece, where the confinement of setting mirrors the different prisons characters find themselves in.
In his first appearance, entering from the storm, and in his first beg scene, halting the drunken brawl, Otello is a figure who emerges from chaos to assert order; his decline into madness, pointed by the profusion of scientific, 'rational', instruments, which become expressions of distortion, is painful to watch, but true.

FILM: PLACIDO DOMINGO IN ZEFFIRELLI'S 'OTELLO' - New York Times
SCREEN versions of Verdi's masterful ''Otello'' aren't so common that one should be flip about an adaptation as full of good things as Franco Zeffirelli's new film, which opens today at the Cinema 1.
''Otello'' is the work of a composer who has come to possess such technical virtuosity that the entire opera has the effect of being one breathtaking inspiration.
Melody, which cascades through ''La Traviata,'' is used sparingly in ''Otello.'' It's as if melody represented everything - including their love and a sense of order - that Otello and Desdemona are in the process of losing, as much because of their own weakness as because of Iago's primal malevolence.

A movie has the potential of capturing peak performances and digital reproduction on a DVD is at least constant.
Movies have the power to amplify such emotions, as demonstrated by Sergei Eisenstein and Ingmar Bergman.
The opera, based on the Shakespearean tragedy, is essentially the story of a hero in a foreign society, Otello the Moor, tormented into murdering his beloved wife, Desdemona, by the deceptions of his cunning aide, Iago.

By 1986, when company earnings reached their apex with 43 films in one year, Cannon shares had soared hundredfold.
After Cannon's financial problems and the two cousins' split, they made competing movies with their new companies based on the contemporaneous lambada dance craze, and spitefully released the two movies on the same day in March 1990.
Only after the two movies were finished did they realize that the planned second movie was vastly superior to the planned first movie.

"Otello" was appearing in the Lyric repertory for the fifth time, and this was the third occasion on which it has opened a season.
The complexity and beauty of this characterization of Otello is, naturally, a tribute to the skills of Placido Domingo as both a singer and an actor.
This was Domingo's first Otello in Chicago and as a conception shaped by a thorough understanding of the music and a keen dramatic intelligence, it is an admirable piece of work.

Otello the Moor (Placido Domingo) is a hero in Venice.
When Iago (Justino Diaz) feels that Otello has done him an injustice by promoting Cassio (Urbano Barberini) in his stead, he swears to have his revenge by destroying the Moor.
Iago plays on Otello´s love for his beautiful wife, Desdemona (Katia Ricciarelli), by sowing the seed of jealousy which ultimately leads to Desdemona´s murder at the hands of her husband who is blinded by "the green-eyed monster"...

As Otello's ship braves raging waves, and the chorus sings dockside, the screen flashes the names of Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, producers of such classics as "Space Vampire" and various Chuck Norris muscle exhibitions.
As the maddened Otello, Domingo is in excellent voice, and utterly comfortable in a familiar role.
Soprano Katia Ricciarelli, as Desdemona, Otello's faithful and innocent wife, sings quite beautifully and is a forceful actress.

Otello was even more spectacularly represented in a 1986 film also using Domingo in the title role.
The moor Otello (Domingo), proclaimed a hero after a great military victory, is driven by jealousy to murder when his devious comrade-in-arms Iago (Sergei Leiferkus) leads him (without cause) to doubt the fidelity of his wife, Desdemona (Te Kanawa).
He has the age and experience to be Otello, but his voice seems to not have gotten the memo---his high notes ring with clarity, and his low range is just as secure.

Otello's weakness is his jealousy, and Iago plants the seeds of suspicion in Otello's mind, suggesting that the youthful Cassio is enamoured of Otello's wife Desdemona.
There are other Otellos available on DVD, such as the Herbert von Karajan film with Jon Vickers, and several live performances featuring Domingo that would be preferable to this.
However Otello is rendered as Othello, which is the character's name in the original play but not in the opera.

Still, since almost all European movies until recent years were lip-synched anyway, it is not such a transgression as it seems, and it would at least make possible the great opera film that Callas never made.
Franco Zeffirelli, who directed and co-wrote the film, directed Callas on stage in "Norma," "La Traviata" and "Tosca." In 1964, he directed her TV special "Maria Callas at Covent Garden," and he remained a friend of the singer until the end.
Note: It is amusing, in a movie where dubbing is one of the subjects, that the opening airport scene is so poorly dubbed.
