He had an extraordinary character change throughout the film as he went easily from a trusting friend to a wicked and hateful man. His companions see him as an honest and dependable man but like most friendly and trust-worthy characters, he has another side that is revealed in the final scene.
Othello is remarkably portrayed as a leader and a man of action rather that words.
Desdomona’s farther joins her hand with Othello’s in the Venecian court, Othello and Desdomona’s hands join in their wedding bed, and again the joining of hands was used when Othello and Iago clasp their bleeding hands together towards the end of the movie.

As a film about deception with its chief focus on masters of deception, Welles deceives the audience into believing several lies, which are only lies in as much as we allow our own perceptions to deceive as to the reality of what is shown.
The self-reflexive nature of the film is almost a learning tool in that it makes obvious to the audience the "tricks" by which films can convince us of their reality, but only in a manner so subtle that it remains an instructional piece on fakery while subconciously faking the audience.
As the film closes, the final goodbye to Quinlan is given over the piano in a genuine moment of sincerity, and despite the simplistic plot and almost vacuously cartoonish nature of several characters, Quinlan is one with whom I sympathize.

Othello (1952) - DVD Movie Central
Othello is probably William Shakespeare’s most disturbing play, and as such, certainly proved ripe fodder for the filmmaking genius of Orson Welles.
This film alone was made over a period of three years owing to constant interruptions because of funding.
There is some inconsistency evident in the source material, as the film sometimes goes from grayscale to sepia tones as it progresses from scene to scene, but often in a restoration, the best materials are spliced from different sources.

Othello has recently married the beautiful, young Desdemona (Irène Jacob), much to the regret of the foolish Roderigo (Michael Maloney), who wanted her for himself.
While the title implies that Othello is the protagonist, it is Iago who motivates the action of the story.
He may have filmed the best possible rendition of the standard interpretation of the play, but it is still the standard interpretation.

The topics that excited classical film theory--realism/formalism, the influence of theatrical modes on film, the close-up as a guarantee of transcendence--are activated by Greenaway’s film, a film that presents as well a rich field for semiotic/structuralist, post-structuralist, and post-modern discourses.
Meanwhile Othello, confined on the threshold, is to contemplate his wife’adultery from outside the bedchamber through some transparent as much as opaque veil, as dramatized in both Parker’s film and the older Russian version by Sergei Yutkevitch (1955).
Othello's marital bed only seen by the spectators at the end of Shakespeare's play not as the place of love but as the receptacle of death is some sort of anathema where one glimpses gender and racial prejudices still unresolved in our contemporary societies, including England and Brazil.

Whether such films are a box-office success or not is of less consequence than the fact that there is a new consciousness of younger audiences who desire more sophisticated and balanced treatment of interracial love on the silver screen.

Incredibly, "Othello" was filmed over a three year period from 1949 to 1952, in nine different cities in Morocco and Italy.
Such criticism is largely unwarranted, for this "Othello" is as much for the eyes as the ears: Welles' bold framing and expressionistic camera angles de-theatricalize the play, undermining the need for stage elocution.
For students of film, this is a must-see and worthy of five stars in that category.

Othello Summary & Essays - William Shakespeare
Along with Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth, Othello is one of Shakespeare's four great tragedies and thus a pillar of what most critics take to be the apex of Shakespeare's dramatic art.
The play presents us with two remarkable characters, Iago and his victim, with Iago as the dominant force that causes Othello to see the infidelity of his young and beautiful wife, Desdemona, with his favorite lieutenant, Michael Cassio.
Indeed, not only is "seeing" and the gap between appearance and reality a central theme of the play, it overlaps with other major thematic strands (trust, honor, and reputation) and sheds light on still others, including the theme of patriarchy and the political state.

This process went on for four years; by the time Welles was done, the film was on its third Desdemona, and the director, himself, had to dub several voices, since most of the dialogue was recorded after the fact.
Remarkably, the finished film not only isn't a disaster, it's a triumph, that rare example of a movie based on a Shakespeare play that's as exciting to look at as it is to listen to.
Michael MacLiammoir is his equal as the conniving (and lustful) Iago, and had this film been more widely seen, it could well have sparked the successful screen career he so obviously deserved.

Welles' sly ability to spin a cobweb of lies, half-truths and speculation into a tale of mythical proportions, is an amusingly suitable self-dedication from a man whose cinema dwelt on the reality masked by a cloak of deception.
Though butchered by RKO, this film is still considered Welles' true masterpiece and is his own personal favourite.
Shifting from wry comedy to a far darker and more melancholy mood, Welles' second film is a memory work charting the subtle but substantial changes wrought by industrialisation.

Laurence Olivier's 1948 film adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet' was the first to be influenced by Sigmund Freud's concept of the Oedipus complex, as interpreted by Ernest Jones' 1910 article 'Hamlet and Oedipus.' Since Olivier's version, the Oedipal interpretation of Hamlet has become standard on film and in performance.
Family romance is at core of Franco Zeffirelli's film adaptation of 'Hamlet.' This is evident in his casting of actors Mel Gibson and Glenn Close in the principal roles, his manipulation of space and landscape, his alteration of the text and his approach to editing.
While the film's correlation with political events is explored, it is posited that its message is ultimately apolitical, as humanity between characters is only expressed within domestic and private settings, rather than in the public domain.
