Others assert, and much evidence proves, the arrival and settlement of Viking Norsemen in Vinland from 800 1400 CE.
Pepper, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and other spices from the Spice Islands (East Indies) were in great demand in Europe, not only for their taste but also in those days before refrigerators, for their ability to disguise the flavor of otherwise old (or worse!) meat.
The Spanish and others settled mainly in the south up to Florida; the English and French settled predominantly in the north; most came under charters from sponsoring monarchs in Europe.

 All American: Colonial Journalism
Although newspapers had been published in Germany, England, Spain, and other European countries in the early 17th century, at roughly the same time that English immigrants were settling Virginia and Massachusetts, the American colonists did not establish a real newspaper of their own for another century.
Between this date and the end of the American Revolution in 1783, colonial journalism grew significantly, thanks to a number of factors, which Emery and Emery identify as population growth, improved transportation and communication, political turmoil, educational advances, and increased commerce (51).
Despite its meagre beginnings and troubling restrictions, the colonial press rose to a position of respect and even influence by the middle of the 18th century, helped along by the political turmoil that was to culminate in the American Revolution.

With the arrival of the Quakers in Pennsylvania in 1656, the path was officially paved for other religions to migrate to the colonies.
However, after the dispersement of the Puritans, the number of other religions in the colonies began to increase.
Events such as the Salem Witchcraft Trials of the 1690's and the Great Awakening of the 1730's only increased the influence of religion in America.

EXCLUSIVE ADVANCE COPYDaschle's Bishop: Don't Vote for Pro-Abortion Politicians
In light of the letters to the editor, I want to present the church teaching in a straightforward manner: You cannot on the one hand support abortion rights and on the other be a Catholic in good standing.
The letters to the editor and statements I have received in a few private letters are clear examples of the erosion in Catholic formation for the last two generations.
Today nominal Catholics are often soft on abortion and badly misinformed about this and other aspects of the faith including the Eucharist and the proper formation of one’s conscience.

The Use of Directed-Energy Weapons to Protect Critical Infrastructure
Whereas the military already employs certain measures to thwart such stealthy attacks abroad and defend key military installations, other more diverse and soft nodes of U.S. critical infrastructure are less well-defended and often not defended at all.
Although other options may exist that could protect critical infrastructure (e.g., surface-to-air missile batteries, fighter aircraft surveillance, and arms control legislation), in the long run none are as cost effective, precise, safe, or swift as a directed-energy defense system.
Hence, the complex calculations required to determine ballistic trajectories and other flight characteristics of conventional munitions are irrelevant to directed-energy devices.
