Otis Spann - Biography and Recommendations
One of the finest pianist's of post-war blues, Otis Spann was inspired to play the piano at the age of eight by local pianist Friday Ford; the chronology of Spann's early years has become somewhat confused by his penchant for giving conflicting information in interviews.
Otis Spann's recording career under his own name began in 1954 with a dynamic single on the Checker label, supposedly recorded after an all night party, coupling the hoarsely hollered 'It Must Have Been The Devil' with the frantic instrumental 'Five Spot'.
Four years were to elapse between some 1956 unreleased Chess sessions and the time Otis Spann was to record in his own right again; when he did it was to be for ventures with distinctly differing objectives.

 LivinBlues- Otis Spann
Otis Spann was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on March 21, 1930 and passed on in Chicago's Cook County Hospital on April 24, 1970.
When his mother died in 1947, Spann was sent north to stay with relatives in Chicago, where he finally met his idol and stylistic mentor, Big Maceo Merriweather, who accepted the young man as his prodigy.
Just as Spann's superb and singular talent was being recognized as worthy of far more than sideman status, his health started to fail.

The Mississippi-born Spann grew under the tutelage of Big Maceo and mastered the pounding barrelhouse piano style that Maceo brought with him to Chicago.
Spann adapted this fierce, urgent style to the burgeoning electric small-band approach that was taking Chicago by storm, and he eventually became an integral element of Muddy Waters's peak ensemble.
Here, with only Lockwood's guitar behind him, Spann is free to indulge in his florid runs and pulsing two-handed rhythmic attack, exploring the turf that connects the barrelhouse of his youth with the modern Chicago style.

“You can hear Muddy in his guitar, and Otis Spann in the piano, but the overriding sensation is of Oscher at the height of his powers and maturity.
Paul shared Muddy's basement with the great Otis Spann who taught Paul the piano.
Working alongside blues greats like Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Sammy Lawhorn, Pee Wee Madison and S.P. Leary, Paul learned the deep Blues phrasing and timing characteristic of his music today.
